He will be roughly 14 million if they want him next year.

So you have to match their existing contract in terms of pay in order to re sign them?

They have to give him a qualifying offer of roughly 14 million (I think it is the average of the top X amount of players in the league estimated that it will be 13.5-14 million) or else he is a FA.

Hard to imagine he signs a cheaper deal to stay with the Jays based on comments at the trade by his agent and the way that the season has gone for him.

Also hard to imagine that AA doesn't want the pick back if he signs with another team and lets him go with no QO.

I guess they could sign him to less without making the qualifying offer but it doesn't really make sense to me that Johnson would choose to go back to the Jays at a cheap rate without testing FA first or accepting the QO.

I would think Johnson will be looking to return to the National League next year. Unless he gets a QO which would be tough to turn down for financial reasons. I think he's as good as gone.

He's been absolutely terrible all year long. One win and an ugly ERA, and has looked pretty ordinary to downright terrible doing it too. I'd be ecstatic if we never saw him in a Jays uniform again. What a disappointment.

Well Bautista more concerned with arguing with the umpire than generating a run there. Too much of that the past two years with him.

He should chat with J.P. about how to deal with strike outs. I guess he was pissed because the pitch he swung at, he felt he needed to swing at because the ump extended the strike zone with that 2nd strike. Understandably he is annoyed but why bother getting into it with the ump in a game that is still firmly within reach.

Oh well. Bonifacio took his place hit a double and was the winning run. So the Jays were better off in the long run.

EDIT: WRONG, Bonifacio took over for Melky. Oopsies.

As much as it pains me to say this, Jose just isn't the person to lead this team to the playoffs. The guy is too self-concerned with his own stats to be the true leader this team needs.

I'm all for trading him now that his value is high and trying to get someone else to grab the reins of this group

Although I love Bautista as a player I think his time is also up in TO. They need to get something for him now.. before he turns into Iggy (value wise)

Those are some of my sentiments...in the other thread I mentioned how there is some scuttlebutt that Texas has inquired about Jose along with some other RH power guys. If the Jays can get a guy like Profar out of Texas in a deal, maybe they need to explore it. He'll be 33 come October, and the truth is that his production while still good is on the decline. With him as the definitive leader the past 2 and a half years the team has not won a great deal.

It's hard as fans to say lets trade our guy who's a superstar who's still producing....but I see teams like Tampa, and Oakland operating this way and it's working for them. In Baseball with the limited teams in the playoffs, I think you need to operate moreso in this manner. Especially an organization who haven't been close to being in the playoffs for 15 years now, and the last time they were...lasted a week into September until they died off.
