IIRC Nonis was left with a team that had bad cap problems. He did pretty good handling them and made a great trade for Luongo. He couldn't afford any good players for the bottom six. He got screwed in Vancouver.

The fun question is to wonder who initiated those talks. I have to guess Nonis, and if so, easily the smartest move he's made as GM of the Leafs. And that alone argues why MLSE shouldn't have done it.
