Iginla was a star player on and off the ice, won awards, represented Canada at the Olympics, and came within a game of repeating Nieuwendyk’s performance of hoisting a Stanley Cup.
This has always bothered me, as it doesn't indicate how close the Flames actually came.

They got within a goal of the Stanley Cup. A single OT marker in game 6 would have completely changed the legacy of our franchise (and Jarome Iginla).

Not a single game. A single goal.

Nice write up, I really liked it. I also remember the trade that sent magic man packing and being disappointed.

Fingers crossed for Klimchuck.

You might be thinking of Ulf Nilsson, who left the Jets to join the Rangers.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Kenta played 2 seasons with the WHA Jets before jumping to the Atlanta Flames

That WHA Jets team had some serious offensive power.

Interesting. I was basing my reply purely on personal recollection from scoring records and stuff I remembered from when he played. I found old hockey cards that listed him at each of the three forward positions. I guess things might have been more fluid then? Either way, close enough I guess.

I'm guilty of the same ... always had him as RW from my kid days, but easily could have been wrong.

Either way no worries!

Nilsson played mostly on RW but he did played as a center and even played as LW sometimes. The Magic Man was awesome and very skilled but something about his work ethic that really drives the fans and media nuts.

the moral of this story is that since we didn't trade Iginla to the Stars we are doomed.
