Jonsson also retired with zero intention of continuing his career. I understand the CPHL retiring players like Ziggy and Jonsson when they retire from hockey and don't intend to play anymore.
Kovalchuk fully intends to play which is why this is a unique situation and not like Palffy or Jonsson.

Veteran Swedish defenceman Kenny Jonsson, a two-time Olympic champion and former NHLer, is retiring from hockey after 19 seasons.
"I made the decision when I felt that I didn't have the motivation to start dry-land training" this off-season, Jonsson said.

The word hockey is used, not NHL.

The situations are different and it doesn't matter if Jonsson continuted his career or not, he publically came out and said he was retiring from hockey because he "didn't have the motivation to start dry-land training". At the time he made his decision he was done and the CPHL retired him with completely makes sense.
Retiring Kovalchuk from the CPHL doesn't make sense IMO for reasons I have already pointed out.

Your links are from 2009... the year he did retire from hockey
5 years after he retired from the NHL and was off my team long ago.
Once Kovalchuk retires from hockey, lets say 10 years from now rather then 5 and there's reports about the retiring, Those are the links you are using trying to tell me it's different

Doug you are incorrect. Jonsson retired in 2009. He did NOT retire from the NHL or hockey before that date and when he went overseas he was still in the CPHL. If you can show me a link that he did retire from the NHL in 2003-04 to support your claim, please show me.
Jonsson simply decided to play in Europe (this is not retiring from the NHL).

Simple question, when was Jonsson removed from the CPHL roster?

I did a search but couldn't find much. However here is a post by Doug from 2005 with Jonsson still on his roster:
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...=Kenny+Jonsson
At that time, Jonsson already had a full year of hockey under his belt in Europe.
Does this help?

Well, 2003-2004 was a lockout year, right?
I found this article from 2005 saying
Quote:
SPORT-Expressen can today reveal that the Tre Kronor-slope Kenny Jönsson will not play an eleventh season in the NHL. After ten winters in the toughest league - and several serious concussions - Jönsson believes that it is time to prioritize family life.

I was just about to post links to the waybackmachine archives of the CPHL 'Canes rosters in April 2005 and 2006 to show that Jonsson had indeed been removed from the roster, but I think Doug's posts serve this argument better

Granted, this doesn't address the argument that the rule should be changed... this is just showing that the Jonsson case is equivalent to the Kovalchuk case.

I'll stick to my argument that it is still a unique situation, Kovalchuk still intends to play hockey.
This can't be ignored and I really think it is a mistake to ignore this.
What will the CPHL do when Kovalchuk signs with a KHL team, make him a UFA giving every team a chance to bid? That won't be fair when we all know he will play.

The article I posted says
"In all likelihood sign Tre Kronor star soon a multi-year contract with Rogle"
Thanks google translate...

Well if he didn't oficially retire from the hockey and simply moved on from the NHL to play in Europe he shouldn't have been removed from the Hurricanes in 2005 either.

Before the start of the CPHL or even NHL season makes sense. It still means me keeping the player on my roster and using $7.5mill in cap space that I can't use in free agency during the entire time.

What if this happens during the season? Does the team get to use the guy for months? We don't know for sure that he's playing in Russia...although its speculated. So for every guy declaring retirement we have to wait and see if he plays elsewhere? That's ridiculous. It also can't be only this time...

I am suggesting a word change in the rules from NHL to Hockey. That would be the end of the debate. You retire from the NHL it doesnt mean you are done playing hockey. You retire from hockey you are finished.
