Well he might be. But I don't think that requires much effort on his part. This is far and away the weakest looking team I can see in the league right now.

I hope the Flames offer was to open the door for him so he can carry on and maybe find a team to play on.

I like Steve Begin, and he didn't look bad at all last year for his role but he is never going to be a real important piece on this team going forward so let's let a young guy who may be one day have the minutes.

Doesn't mean he'll play for the Flames guys. The Heat need a veteran presence as well as some leadership. It'll be a neat full circle for Begin - start with the Flames AHL affiliate and end with the Flames AHL affiliate.

If it's low dollars, and a two way deal, then why not have the guy in the fold?

The Oilers went too young and paid for it, so far the Flames are building up a secondary core which I think is smart. the other part of the puzzle is veteran guys that can iron out the wrinkles for young players.
I thought Begin played great last year for us. Don't mind the signing, just as long as he doesn't have another 2 goal game to screw us out of a sweet draft pick again.

I agree we need good team guys for the younger players to learn from. But if he signs here how many spots do we even have for young players to fill? We already need to move out 1-2 players as it is right now.

Our top 9 is pretty much locked up, and we will have McGrattan, Bouma, Begin, Jackman, Horak, Reinhart, Nemisz, Blair Jones, Byron, and rookies like Monahan and Hanowski battling for the last 3-4 spots.

Probably tough for youngsters to look up to someone who is not an NHL player except in the eyes of one team. Unless he is REALLY REALLY something in the dressing room. Begin would be good on the farm. Dave Lowry in his twilight i think had a little more weight in setting an example. Can't really say why i think that.

Pretty mercenary of Begin and he hope the door doesn't hit him on the way out. Lucky to be even considered for a contract.

Hopefully this is just a rumour. Feaster has been doing so well so far this summer.

I'm ok with Begin coming back. Though if that's the case, I'd want to see Bouma play instead of Jackman (ideally traded for anything).

Meh, I'm more of the opinion that we should probably send Knight, Horak, Reinhart to Abbotsford for more professional seasoning, so signing a Vet. center would allow that... that being said why on earth would you make an offer to Begin? Plenty of better options still out there.

Betting it's a two-way deal. I can't see Begin not jumping on any contract with guarenteed NHL dollars.

That and a fountain of youth. He's 35 now.

Good on him for playing 500+ games in the NHL, but he's just not that good.

Have we heard anything about Bouma's knee lately? Is it going to be okay for the start of the year?

If the flames are going to have players breaking into the lineup (Nemisz, Bouma, Reinhart, Knight, Horak) they might need to play on the 4th line. No need for Begin to take one of those spots

Begin brought basically nothing last year unless he was a superstar in the lockerroom. he didn't hit, didn't fight worth a damn and was a liability defensively. I was fine with the signing last year at camp as I thought he could come in and show guys a strong work ethic on and off the ice but with so many forwards already on the team and him showing he has nothing left on the ice if they need his "leadership" then hire him as a coach because he has no business seeing the ice for the Calgary Flames.

If it is for Abbotsford sign him to an AHL deal.

I usually think people get way to concerned with the thought of signing vetrans on our rebuilding team. The fact of the matter is, we lack NHL ready prospects, so we do need to surround our few decent prospects with actual NHL playes to avoid the Oiler issue.

But Begin, who I like, is a different story. We don't lack prospects that can play that role, so why not let the prospects play. Unless Begin is truely such an amazing role model that we want him around for that reason, otherwise I don't understand it. 2-Way does make it better though.

'A spot' for a young guy should not mean they have it no matter how poorly they play. I dont think that helps their development at all.

When guys like Bouwma and Knight are struggling, instead of ramming their heads in to the walls for 80 games they can take a spin in the press box, watch the work ethic of a vet in practice, etc.

Hartley has shown no reluctance to sit Begin. And if these guys cant beat him out for a role over time then neither the youngsters nor the flames are further ahead pretending otherwise.

I dont see a downside.

He was skating in practice already in April. No pads, but his knee looked fine.
