In Montreal, that may almost be enough.

In jerseys sales alone this is a great deal for the Habs.

List of active players with a higher point-per-game average in the playoffs than Briere:
Crosby
Malkin
Giroux
Ovechkin
St. Louis

About as elite of a group you can find in the NHL today.

List of active players with more playoff points than Briere:
Jagr
Elias
Zetterberg
Hossa

He's going to be 36 to start the season, so I understand not loving the deal, but for his impressive playoff stats alone I think he's worth taking a flyer (heyoo) on.

I thought bought out players also can't sign until July 5th. They're just able to talk to teams right away whereas regular pending UFAs only have 48 hours prior to July 5th.

That's why Lecavalier was talking to teams around the draft

The Habs will have to make the playoffs for this deal to be worth it as Briere is one of those guys that actually ramps his game up in the postseason.

You are right. NHL teams just cannot announce if they've agreed to terms with regular UFA's/RFA's but it's cool to talk about bought out players freely.

Lecavalier's definitely signed in Philadelphia though. Contract details are out, he's everywhere on the Flyers website and they have even released his jersey number.

He's tied for 11th in history for most overtime goals, tied for 16th in history for most playoff game winning goals, tied for 15th in history for most playoff overtime goals, 6th most points in the playoffs out of all active players, 4th most playoff goals out of all active players, 4th most playoff overtime goals out of all active players, 2nd most playoff winning goals out of all active players (only behind Jagr)

He's a big game performer. Every playoff game is a big game

Briere is versatile and can play wing if needed so it gives them some options there as well. He's great in the playoffs, and I thought he was a good lockerroom guy. One of the downsides is his size, he's another small forward that the Canadiens have loved to acquire over the years but he's not the worst of the bunch.

Another big one is the cap, but if the Canadiens were willing to do 5M and 3M instead of 4M and 4M, even a bad year this year and with compliance buyouts and retained salary transactions (and I'm pretty sure they might be able to be used in conjunction of each other) it's far from unmovable contract, assuming he isn't given a NMC which could be the case. A good year from him and they don't have to worry.
Ryder was horsecrap in the playoffs, he wasn't offered a deal at all.

I hate this deal. Makes no sense to sign another small guy, let alone a small OLD guy.

Despite putting up decent regular season numbers, you don't think Ryder was in the plans of the Canadiens because of a bad playoff series? And yet you hate a deal that brings in arguably the best available playoff performer?

I understand that this deal could backfire and as I don't like the Canadiens I kind of hope it does, but I don't think it's a terrible deal. Although I'm a fan of Briere, just hope he doesn't get another concussion.
