No, actually, they sound exactly like the Vancouver Canucks of the present, signing players to long term deals, then try desperately to get rid of them a few years later when they are screwed financially.

Is that not what the Flames did?

I'd gladly take Giroux for 8 years. The guy is only 25

You don't have much negotiating leeway when you call him the best player in hockey. Anyway - terms longer than 5 years scare me, regardless of the player. Flyers had better cross their fingers on this one.

Appears to be re-signed, reportedly just north of 64 million over 8 years

Giroux might be one of the top 5, certainly top 10 players in the league. If the Flyers are going to spend money and give term like this he's the guy you give it to. Looks pretty similar to Getzlaf and Eric Staal and I certainly put him on the same level as those guys. Just seems to be the going rate for a top young center these days.

No brainier to get him locked up but boy are the Flyers going to be in cap trouble for a quite some time.

An update on Giroux deal I tweeted about earlier today... It's finalized now: 8 years, $66.2 M _ $8.275 M AAV. Includes full NMC

Giroux is one of my favorite players and is definitely on par with Getzlaf, Perry and Staal.
That being said, Philly is a circus.
