Speaking strictly of the draft: I think the Canucks certainly have to be in consideration for draft winners. Even though they traded away Schneider, they got Horvat and Shinkaruk as well as Subban and Cederholm in the later rounds. Good draft for them.

Flames have to be up there as well. Three highly skilled players to go along with another depth RW (addresses a need) and four defensemen - one of which could turn out to be a HUGE steal (Roy).

I really liked the Sabres draft, I think they did an amazing job:

- Ristolainen and Zadorov is an amazing pair of defensemen to get in the 1st round
- they were somehow able to get Jamie McBain and a 2nd for Andrej Sekera
- they drafted 3 promising forwards in Compher, Hurley and Bailey in the 2nd
- Baptiste is good value in the 3rd and Florentino could be a sleeper in the 5th

Nice job, Regier. The future looks great in Buffalo ... not too surprising though if you have four 1st rounders in two years. Grigorenko, Girgensons, Ristolainen and Zadorov are a pretty solid basis going forward.

Also, you just have to admire what the Blue Jackets did. Kekalainen and Davidson are simply doing an amazing job ... it's easy to look good when you are the successor to a terrible GM like Howson, but it's pretty impressive nonetheless. Yesterday:

- Wennberg and Rychel are very solid selections at 14 and 19
- Dano at 27 was surprising, but I like the guy due to personal reasons (his father was a star player for my hometown team in Austria)
- Heatherington could be a valuable pick in the 2nd round
- Bjorkstrand could be a steal at 89

Obviously I also think the Flames had a very good draft in the 1st round.

Don't really get the rave about the Canucks draft. Horvat is a solid pick at 9, but I kind of feel that this pick alone was not a good enough return for Schneider. Shinkaruk is a bit of a steal at 24, but it makes you wonder why he slipped that far. Subban is freaking 5'9", he'll have a tough time in the pros and obviously benefitted from his surname.

Yeah unfortunately the Preds did pull a heist getting a #1 talent outside the top 3. I'm thankful for divisional realignment in that regard...

Anyway I thought the Wings did quietly very well. Let's face it, 80% of what you do at the draft is what you do in round 1, and the Wings came in with a #18 pick and got a top 15 talent plus another pick with it.

Nashville for getting Jones at 4 was crazy.

Buffalo got two very nice defensive prospects.

Calgary did well with their picks.

For me though, the real winner was New Jersey. Lou gave up a can't miss NHLer in Horvat for the starting goaltender they've needed to take over from Brodeur for years. One first round draft pick for a top end goalie entering his prime. Lamoriello for GM of the year even if he doesn't do anything else all year.

If we believe that the flames did well yesterday (and that seems to be the consensus), how about a reminder that with our 4th rounder we got Corbin Knight?

When I remembered that, I think we had an excellent use of our draft picks this year. Time will tell of course, but from here, today, we seem to be moving in the right direction.
