Bolland has had issues with a cranky back, and never slotted as better than a #3 Center on the 'Hawks. Great Heart, but rotten in the dot. $3.375 million for a #3/4 center was gonna be hard to fit under a shrinking cap.

Loved what he had done for my guys, but, with the injury time piling up, and limited offensive development, my feeling is that the Leafs overpaid.

according to TSN a better deal than the Canucks got for Schnieder. The Devils only gave then 1 pick when the Oilers were going to give them 2 picks AND a prospect.

Who would guess that Bolland was worth 3 picks and Schnieder only 1.

Would you have traded #9 for #51, #117, and a forth next year? That is essentially what you're suggesting.

I really can't say I'm a fan of Bolland to the degree others are suggesting on here, enough to suggest he's worth a 2nd rounder +. I really think this guy is the flavour of the month, much like there's someone like this every playoffs (ie: Versteeg). While neither team got ripped off, I can't help but think Toronto had to give more than they should have.

I'd say offhand that Bolland looked better in 2010 than in 2013. If something gets to be flavour of the month in two different months, it might be time to consider putting it on the regular menu.

If nothing else, he's a guy with a winning résumé who can tell the Leafs what it takes to win and actually get them to listen. He might be able to turn the dial on the team, not just the radio.

Chicago sheds a 3rd line player making 3.375 million for 3 draft picks. They obviously decided re-signing Bickell was of more importance.

Toronto lands a local boy but takes on a cap hit that puts them closer to being a cap challenged team. Capgeek lists them with 16.233 million in space but they only have 12 players signed which means they have to add another 11 roster payers with the cap room remaining. I realize that not all of the FA's will be re-signed but the list includes some of their key players...

RFA's: Kadri, Bernier, Colborne, Gunnarsson, Franson
UFA's: Bozak, MacArthur

Once they buyout Komisarek they will have close to 20 million. I think they have plenty of room. I doubt Bozak is coming back now. they probably put Kadri on the first line, Grabovski on the 2nd, Bolland on the 3rd, McClement on the 4th.

Does Bowman have a superstition that he must trade a player to the Leafs on June 30 after winning the Cup? The Versteeg trade was on June 30, 2010.

It's not superstition. The hockey gods demand a sacrifice!

The Flames traded Rob Ramage to Toronto after winning the Stanley Cup, but they did it on the wrong day — June 16. They never won a championship again. Coincidence?

Now, for a serious answer: The new year for contracts begins July 1. No surprise that a team in cap trouble would make a trade on June 30. And goodness knows Chicago was right up against the cap both in 2010 and this year.
