I find there's not many options for a larger dog that are still hypo-allergenic, but one I think would be cool is a Portuguese Water Dog. Apparently extremely good with kids, and playful.

Too bad Obama's family had to get one too, which has now driven up the price for one. Everyone wants the Prez's dog.

Stay away from Pugs. They have to be the worst for shedding.

Guess matters how you define medium sized, labradoodle's have a rather wide range of sizes given the "designer" nature of them, but you're probably looking at anywhere from 25lbs to 65lbs depending on breeding, anywhere from 14-24 inches in height.

True, they shed, but they are freakin amazing at snorting and sleeping.

I've had two Airedales. Great companions and the best dogs I've ever had. I think they are about 50-65 lbs.

Airedale will be my next dog after the Wheaton. The wife is scandalized that I would look ahead like that, but what can you do.

One word of caution about doodle breeds, which some here are recommending - without starting the whole pure bred vs mixed breed debate (I'm not a pure bred snob), I do know from talking to several people now that have labradoodles that the the qualities you are looking for - hypoallergenic, non-shed, etc, are highly variable in the breeding - some doodles will exhibit the characteristics you want, and others might not, and you likely won't be able to tell at the puppy stage.

Standard poodles are really awesome dogs. And you get to decide on their hair-cut. It doesn't have to be the "show" style at all.

I am allergic to dogs and I got a golden/lab-poodle mix (double doodle) and I've had no problems with my allergies.
I got a "mini" and she's 50 lbs right now so definitely a medium sized dog.
Got here from here... just south of Edmonton: http://www.heartyk9s.com/about.html

If the Airedale is a little on the big side for you, my mom saw one stand up on the front of the stove to check what was in the back pot, but everythitng else is what you want then the welsh terrier is what you are looking for. Same look same spunk and attitude smaller package. Breed standard is in the 20 lb range

Or a Lakeland terrier, which looks exactly like an Airedale at 15 pounds. Had one, and they have tons of personality/smarts

A great non-shedding dog, and also not very girly, is the Miniature Schnauzer:
Smart, affectionate, easy to train - but it is a terrier, so it barks.

Having owned a Maltese and Irish Spaniel. I know they are both good for people with allergies. Also almost any breed mixed with a Bishon. We have a Dachshund Bishon mix and Wiener dogs are suppose to be high in dander but our vet has told us it is the Bishon coat that offsets that.
