First post updated with Rossi's article.

With what Shero is rumored to be asking for Letang, any trade will have to Letang agree to a long term deal before hand.

LOL. Not even close.

Friedman mentioned that talks between the sides were not going well. I wonder if the rumor started from that?

19. After watching one of his mentors (David Poile) go through difficult dances with Ryan Suter and Shea Weber, is Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero prepared to start the season with Kris Letang heading into unrestricted free agency? This is going to be an interesting one -- and not just because of the money. According to one friend (and it's not the guy I work with), Letang is upset, feeling someone in the organization is badmouthing him to the media. I can't speak to that because no one's said anything to me, but it shows how complex these things can get. Keeping cool will be critical for both sides.

How good would Letang be on a team without Crosby, Malkin and co. drawing attention and creating time and space for him

He was their best player when Crosby and Malkin were out a couple of seasons ago.

Letang had a poor showing in the playoffs for sure, but I think some of the criticism here is overdone. He is a great skater and a valuable player.

Having said that, I don't think it makes sense for the Flames to go after him. He is the type of player to add as a final piece via free agency.

Letang is going to be over paid and become one of the biggest bust in hockey.

Leafs give us one more reason to laugh at you trade for this guy.

Letang is no different than Karrlson. They are puck movers...more of a rover type. They live and die by offense. If the Flames did not have Wideman I would say go hard at Letang.

Letang has incredible hands and hockey instincts. Very high hockey IQ.

Watching him in the Playoffs, and yes I watched almost every Pens game this post season, he was amazing with the puck. But in terms of Physicality, I dont think he played overly physical.

For the asking price, I dont see what he could bring to the table that truly benefits the current direction.

Now if the Flames got Lecavalier, Richards, Letang and a UFA starting G... We would be right back where we were before moving Iginla out.

Please dont screw up our rebuild Feaster...

All depends. If Vinny and Richards were 1 year rental deals. The Flames could actually come out with more assets down the road and still have a high draft pick for next year.

If Letang is available for cheap you take him. You don't turn away from him. There's a reason he's highly regarded in the league. Just because you think the Flames aren't making the playoffs, it doesn't mean you can't have exciting players to watch.

Hahaha Watch this happen..

Sign Vinny to 3 year 2-3 Mil.
Sign Richards to 3 year 2-3 Mil.
Sign Jagr to 1 year 4.5 Mil.
Sign Bryz to 3 year 2-3 Mil.
Trade 22 + 28 + Prospect for Letang.

Would a guy like Bryzgalov sign a cheap deal with the Penguins? That would be a big F U to the Flyers while still being paid by them.

He's talking about us, not the Pens.

If he signs as a free agent the Flames should go for it.

But if the Flames have to give up assets (and significant assets according to the rumor) to acquire him and he will waste the prime of his career while the Flames are basement dwellers, it makes no sense.

Why do you think he will be available for cheap?

An update from Rossi:
http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/...#axzz2XNlsoSzx
Quote:
The Penguins are agreeable to paying Letang slightly over $7 million annually, sources said.
Letang, who is set to count at $3.5 million against the salary cap next season, can negotiate an extension under terms of the NHL's new labor contract.

If he accepted the Penguins offer, Letang would rank no worse than sixth among current defensemen with about a $6.75 million salary-cap hit. The offer to Letang could be considered the third most lucrative to retain a player in Shero's seven-year tenure.

Shero has said since January that signing Letang to a long-term contract is a top priority.
However, Letang's situation is seemingly playing out similarly to the one faced by center Jordan Staal last summer.
Then, the Penguins presented an offer with little wiggle room — 10 years at around $57 million — and after Staal rejected it, Shero traded him to Carolina for a package that included eighth overall pick (defenseman Derrick Pouliot) at the NHL Entry Draft, center Brandon Sutter and defensive prospect Brian Dumoulin.

The Penguins do not pick until the third round of the draft, in Newark, N.J., on Sunday.
Shero had not yet decided to trade Letang as of Thursday.

The Penguins would want at least one NHL player under contract for several seasons, a top prospect and a first-round pick in exchange for Letang, the sources said.

If a trade were necessary, the Penguins would prefer to move Letang to the Western Conference, and they are intrigued by prospects with Anaheim and Vancouver, the sources said.
