Shady dealings is just the way the French do business. We have an office in France and there's never a paper trail of what was quoted compared to what was ordered. Lots of paper napkin pricing and money under the table. I work on projects from all around the world and it's the only country that operates this way (although Italy is close).

It's not just the French. It's everywhere. But anything we hear here or in US is pale in comparison to the scale of Government corruption in countries like Russia, Italy, India, China etc. And what about the Middle East countries where corruption is simply legitimized by the rulers owning all of public assets?

Yet, Norway, Sweden, Denmark – corruption is practically non-existent over there.

That's ridiculous. This is how business is done in 90 percent of the world.

Even if that's true, what does France have to do with anything?

Trying to draw a comparison because both places speak the same language is pretty ridiculous. When a scandal breaks out in Alberta or in the rest of Canada, no one claims that that's just how business is done in England.

We are talking big business and projects here not car sales or property sales. In my line of work it's multimillion dollar projects where margins are scritinized and micromanaged, and lean 2 implementation is to be followed from beginning to end it's not common at all. Typically the quoting is very detailed with all emails and discussions recorded, spreadsheets and checklists that have been reviewed by supervisors and analysts. When it comes to the France stuff, nothing. Multimillion dollar jobs with zero paper trail and undetermined scope. The only thing worse than these jobs are ones with Saudi Aramco where they have 30 engineers to one of you and never completely pay for the work as they will spend years making you submit more and more documentation after the job is complete.

Just saying in my dealing the French are pretty shady. I'm not saying every French person is shady but you can go back to Adscam with all the money in envelopes being transfered under the table. It seems to be the norm in a lot (not all of course)of French business.
