I think you can once you're eliminated. Pretty sure the playoffs were still in progress when we flipped Erixon for Horak and the two 2nds.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 18s Gonchar and the Stars have reached agreement on a 2 yr deal, believed to be $5 mil per, $10 mil total. Pending signed paperwork. #TSN

Short term I dont think the dough is that bad. Gonchar has been a top-2 dman his whole career. And he still had a pretty good season with Ottawa.

There's no time when trades aren't allowed. After the deadline however, players can't play for the team which traded for them until the next season.

Not sure on the value on this deal, but Gonchar is a beast. Always been a favourite, since watching him torch the Flames in fall of 2002, then later that season in Calgary...2 goals each game.
Really wished somewhere along the way, the Flames could've got him.
Effortless skating, speed, an offensive instinct and ability to read the ice that most forwards don't have.
11 years on, at 39 years old and he's still able to perform at an upper level in this league. Remarkable.

This.
There's usually at least one trade during the playoffs. And when it happens, there are always people surprised about it. I don't blame them. Usually the trades are minor

And this is why Wideman's contract is not that bad. Free Agency bloats values and big minute defensemen that produce offensively get a premium.

For vets that experienced 2 lock-outs..I can imagine their priority is to cash in as much as possible at this point.

So they traded a 6th round pick
to make an aging player an offer, that would of been the best on july 1 anyways
at least they have new jerseys

Wow that seems like a big overpayment for a 39 year old D man that who knows when he slows down quite a bit that could happen by next season. Real gamble for DAL for 5m of cap space JMO.

Meh, only a 2 year deal with tons of cap space. Gonchar played great this season too, good signing.

1. I am happy for Gonchar
2. Dallas is a hated rival, makes me happy if he falls off the age cliff and Stars are stuck with that salary.

I guess he's following the Detroit model of acquire old veteran defencenan. Guys like Murphy and Chelios worked out okay there. I wonder if Nill also felt that the Red Wings might target Gonchar too.
