In the bad news department, MLB lost the head to head matchup with the NHL. Yeah, that's right: the NHL beat MLB, and it wasn't even close. Saturday night's Blackhawks-Red Wings Game 5 on NBC drew 2.9 million viewers, and picked up a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demo, compared to just 0.5 for MLB in the same demo.
MLB knows the fix for declining fan interest. Simply turn a blind eye to roids and bring back the 50-60 home run derbies.

Keep in mind that advertisers really only care about the 18-49 demographic numbers as they are the ones that are most likely to consume their products.

I know the Memphis/San Antonio series had pretty bad ratings.

Basically continuing the multi-decade theme that fans have never punished a professional sports league for a lockout, even one where an entire season was lost.

Just a sappy call by pundits that doom was inevitable.

The only time fans really punished a sports league for a labour dispute was the 1994 baseball player strike where a season started and then the championship was not contested.

Lessons: Never in a million years ever let players get into a position to strike midway through a season and 2) don't start a season unless you're going to finish it.

You'll see more lockouts in the future. Because they do work for management.

Pretty good celebrity turnout for NHL playoffs;

I noticed no Vince Vaughn. A few years ago he was always picked up by cameras at Hawks playoff games but I can't recall seeing him this year.

I imagine the Spurs/Grizzlies ratings would be much lower, would you happen to have those numbers?

No question about it....2 really small markets though.

Game 4 of the Spurs/Grizzlies NBA Western Conference Finals drew 5.2 million viewers on ESPN Monday night, down 53% from Heat/Celtics Game 4 last year (11.1M), and down 30% from Mavericks/Thunder Game 4 in 2011 (7.4M).

The four-game Spurs/Grizzlies Western Conference Finals averaged a 3.1 U.S. rating on ESPN and ABC, down 50% from Heat/Celtics last year (6.2), down 28% from Mavericks/Thunder in 2011 (4.3), and the lowest rated NBA conference final since Spurs/Jazz in 2007 (2.8).

It's obviously all conjecture at this point, but I was always of the opinion that a second complete season lockout would have turned off a lot of fans, but a shortened season is probably actually good for business. A 50 game season is more exciting and is probably a better number of games anyway.

Luckily for mlb, ratings don't matter these days. For example, the dodgers new TV deal is 100 million more per year than NBC's national deal with the NHL, even though less than 100,000 people watch Dodger's games.

The condense schedule did make the NHL have strong consistent momentum right at a point when people were hungry for hockey. I enjoyed seeing Flames games on tv more times within a week.
