They would only save $3 million over 15 years. Also Luongo still has a NMC and can just say no, buy me out.

Tell your friend to check his sources.
The Leafs weren't a cash strapped team who'd be getting an AHLer who is owed $36M removed from their books in return.

Yeah. And? Why would a company not save 3M if they had the option to?

If they are at an impasse where they are left with the option of buying out Luongo or trading him for DiPietro and buying out DiPietro it's simply a no-brainer in my opinion. You're going to get nothing from either goalie, at least one way you save money and don't have to worry about Luongo biting you in the ass in the near future by signing with a rival.

Of course that's only the case if Luongo has become completely untradable (outside of for DiPietro) and is willing to waive his NMC. I never said differently, I was just responding to the posters who said it would make more sense just to buy out Luongo over DiPietro which I don't see why.

Which is why they'd only do it if they got a good asset in return.

And Luongo only has a NTC, which means he has to go through waivers before a buyout. I mean, he could try to play hardball but then he might lose any control over his destination.

I also don't think the Islanders are such a poor destination any more. They're a team on the rise and they're moving to within 10 minutes of Manhattan in a year or two.

I wonder what Mike Milbury thinks of this situation.

Dreger says he possibly won't report if he doesn't get traded this season. Gillis handled this situation perfectly

So wouldn't it be a bad situation either way for Vancouver? They trade bongo for Rick, buy out Rick. Then say bongo retires 2 years before his contract expires, don't both teams end up splitting the cap penalty?

Sounds like Dreger talking out of his ass more than anything.

Though it would raise an interesting scenario. If Luongo doesn't report then what happens to his contract? The Ducks got Niedermayer's contract off their cap and didn't have to pay him when he wouldn't report in 2007. Could the Canucks void his contract?

Becuase, why would you buy out and have about a 1.5-2 mil/year drop when you could have a 1.5 mil/year plus some good cheese coming back as well

Luongo is still a solid goalie. His contract is no good but buying out DiPietro doesn't do anything for Vancouver. They could jut buyout Luongo. Islanders would actually use Luongo where they can't with DiPietro.
would guess that's the only way it's worked out

the Canucks would then technically be buying assets

something I can see a lot of the high revenue teams with open buyouts do this year as the article posted below points out like the Leafs did a few years ago to get Franson

take back a contract to buy out, get a bigger asset back in return

This will not happen. There is no way the canucks will buy out Luongo, so there is no way they buyout Dipietro. The canucks could have traded luongo for nothing and be rid of the contract, but are holding out for a real asset coming back. AKA the issue isn't that there are no takers for Luongo at no price, but that there is no one willing to pay the Canuck's price which is a top 9 forward or top 6 defenseman based on the rumor mill.

I would be willing to wager that Snieder gets traded and the canucks continue with Luongo rather than buy him out.
