Sounds like they are more interested in getting a name then a coach. This and the Sakic hire tells me the PR department is running hockey operations.
Maybe they need that to maintain interest in Colorado. But if was a fan I would be concerned.
I'm willing to bet COL makes a massive jump in the standings next year (similar to CLB this season) and they are right in the playoff mix...and everyone will be heralding this as a brilliant move.

I bet that's true. And I bet it will have little or nothing to do with Patrick Roy's ability or lack of ability as a coach.

Despite the uncertainty, this has to be an exciting time for the Avs. Lacroix and Sacco out and Sakic and Roy in? I think Roy is a very capable coach. He certainly proved himself to be a very good coach in juniors.
Why? Roy has actual coaching experience, and winning experience at that. His players seem to love him. Heck, Radulov said something like he'd swim across the ocean to play for Roy again and that guy occasionally assaults his coaches.
I would be worried if they hired him simply for his name, but he has been developing his own coaching style and refining it in the minors and has done very well for himself.
If he didn't have the name people would be seriously questioning hiring someone with his credentials. But then we wouldn't be having this conversation because he wouldn't have been given the job.
I don't really care as I don't care about Colorado. But this is a PR move first and a hockey move second.

He has a decent if not very good record as a junior coach, won a Memorial Cup and was a former NHL player.
If you take away most coaches NHL career's they would have questionable credentials so not sure why we would do it with Roy. Part of the thing that would make him an appealing coach is that he spent so much time in the NHL.
Guy Boucher didn't have much of a better resume when he was hired did people question that? Ron Rolston had a much less impressive history and was just hired as the Sabres coach.

Oh, you know this for sure do you? So basically every hockey reporter around has an incredibly hard time getting information out of Denver yet you know for sure that it's a PR move? If anything it's the other way around, Roy has a great record in the Q and should bring back credibility and a winning type of atmosphere back to that organization.

I think people did question both. Many still question Boucher and Rolston is still not proven.
But both coaches had experience in both the development leagues and the pro leagues. Most of the best coaches in the NHL spent time coaching pro prior to taking on a head coaching position with an NHL team.
Are you suggesting that Roy being an ex-franchise goaltender for the Avalanche and a major name in that market doesn't have anything to do with him being selected?

Indeed. It is just a coincidence that the Franchise has just brought back two of its biggest names. They are being brought on exclusively for their credentials and it has nothing to do with there playing experience or popularity with the franchise. Silly me.

I remember Boucher being a hot candidate and that TB got good reviews for hiring a young, up and coming guy. Don't remember much (any?) questioning or criticizing of that choice.
For Rolston I haven't really heard anything good or bad and he seems to just be a guy that most people shrug their shoulders and say sure but haven't seen much of a questioning of his credentials.
I think Roy being an Ex-Avalanche makes him for sure a more desirable candidate but that doesn't make him any less qualified and doesn't make him any less qualified. I would say this is a hockey move first and a PR bonus that they have a guy who is qualified also a former popular player. I don't think the Avs should be punished for hiring a qualified candidate just because it also helps with the PR.
Patrick Roy's brother tells our Qc City reporter that he was wrongly quoted by the Denver Post and that he expressed only his intuition #Avs
