Very interesting interview with Nill today by Bob McCowan on Sportsnet. They asked all sorts of stuff and he gave pretty pointed answers
- wants a veteran coach that can take the younger players forward. Will interview Desjardins and possibly some other young guys, but restated he wants a veteran coach.
- his window in his contract to get out of Detroit was just opening and he had stayed with Detroit the last while because of his wifes cancer and waiting for his kids to be finished school and moved on
- he has to change the attitude of the players to a more "Detroit" type of thinking. Specifically mentioned that instead of leaving after practice to go for lunch he expects the players to be like Chris Chelios and hitting the gym. Talked about Detroit losing to Pittsburgh in the final and the very next morning at 8:00 AM Chelios was at the rink in the gym working out.
- he said Dallas has some good pieces but needs to add more to the base.
I found it interesting, especially about the speculation over the last 5-6 years about him being up for every GM position when he didn't have an out from Detroit. They also mentioned that he was paid GM money as the Assistant GM in Detroit.
