Forgive my ignorance... How do you have an outdoor hockey game in Los Angeles?

We saw what happened to Crosby. I cringed at the sight of watching Kipper do the splits in -20 degree weather at the outdoor game in Calgary. Bryzgalov scratched himself last year lol. I'm not a fan of the idea. Just seems too dangerous for the players.

What about that play had anything to do with the game being played outdoors? Are there any examples of a player being injured due to the conditions of an outdoor game?

The same way you have indoor hockey games in arenas with a temperature in the 15-20°C range.

In January, the average high in Los Angeles is around 20 and the average low is around 10. I would think that the biggest challenge would be to protect the ice from rain and sun. As long as they have some sort of cover over the ice during the day, and work on the rink and play the game after dark, it shouldn't be any worse than any other NHL arena.

Once the sun goes down in LA, it gets pretty cold, pretty quickly in the winter time.

The ice quality in Dodger Stadium will probably be better than it was in McMahon Stadium because it was too cold in Calgary.

It's your on-ice awareness. Many players commented on how 'small' everything felt versus being indoors. Sun / glare in your eyes, etc. It's just different. I don't have evidence or anything, I just see it as being more dangerous

You end up rolling the dice on the conditions.

So no examples? The idea that these games are somehow more dangerous is pretty much baseless. If that was the case the NHLPA wouldn't be all for this plan.

I was at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night, and for a beautiful day it got pretty damn cold after the sun went down, and that's the end of April not January.

Average low for LA I'm sure is airport temperature, also. As you know, Dodger Stadium is up on a hill and it's colder there than most of LA at pretty much any given time.

this is a great start - in a couple of years, teams will play about 75 games per season outdoors, and the indoor ones will become the focal point of the season.

Looking at the average money a hockey player makes per year, they should be playing every game outdoors, sometimes twice a day.

And I myself would have a better time watching the games outdoor. Being caught up in busy rinks with strangers smelling my hair and people not watching the game isn't what the experience should be. Outdoors with that feeling of -25 at the rink, the fun of it, that's where it's at.

I think these outdoor games are awesome, I'm glad they are doing this series. Any event that can get the NHL more publicity in the US, especially with the non-traditional hockey fan is good in my books.

As much as I hate crass commercialism, I can't help but like the outdoor games and the spirit they bring with them.

By the time the Flames had theirs, it was already finished as pure event IMO, but damned if I didn't still love it and I bet most of the Flames fans here did. Fans of all teams should get to experience that.
