Charging spares!?!?! If I ever got asked to come spare for someone and they told me "by the way, that's $20" I'd walk out and leave them short for the game. When we need spares they are equally doing us a favor by bailing us out from being short guys as we are doing them a favor by giving them a free ice time.

no, becasue paying f/t guarantees your spot - if you spare then who knows when you are playing.

as a f/t player, i don't care if a spare plays for free - becasue he is filling in for someone who can't make it and has paid their fee already.

That seems unbelievably cheap to me to charge someone for helping you out. I have no issue with spares coming when my team is short, and I couldn't imagine someone making me pay if they needed me to come out when their team was short.

Kind of off-topic but this is as good a thread to ask as any. I'm just curious what you guys are paying for ice time in Calgary? A bunch of friends of mine and I have been renting ice once or twice weekly to have a pick-up game - it's not a league or anything.

We pay $170 for an hour and $254 for an hour and a half. Just curious what it is down there.

BTW - it's a lot of fun if there are any Fort Mac CPer's who might be interested.

I looked for ice time in the past couple of week when I was visiting. I have sesn prices from 80-130$ an hour before 4pm on weekdays at some rinks. However after 2pm it goes up to 250/hr or more after that. I think we did a 730 at Winsport last week and it was 243 an hour.

It's not like you are asking somebody to help you move. The person is getting some fun out of it, and is helping pay for their share of the costs. In our shinney league the money from spares goes towards covering some of the extra expenses, getting extra ice time, and if there is money left over then we have a wind-up at the end of the season.

It would be one thing if you are calling somebody in last minute, however our subs are scheduled days in advance. We also have to leave the sub list as "first ones to reply get the spot." I also think it's just as unfair to the guys that commit to coming out to have somebody able to just drop in and not have to pay. The FTs pay their money and also invest their time and energy; the subs are just asked for their share.

Maybe we should make this a poll?

Damn, now I really need to move back to Calgary, I could be saving $1000 bucks a year!

In my 12 years of playing hockey out with a dozen different teams it is always expected from the team and the spare the players cough up dough to play. I understand that you are helping out by filling in but you still get ice time.

Now for the big question! Does anyone charge goalies????

Yup. It's not my fault they need $3000 in equipment every 2 years so they can look cool like the NHL goalies

To spare? Hell no. Games without goalies suck. Same goes for shinny.

No sorry, not as a spare as a full timer. Would never charge for a spare goalie and always free beer for them as well.

Our regular goalie pays the same league fees as the rest of the players. Spare goalies never pay, and often get free beer afterwards. We charge our spares $15, it helps pay for pucks and spare jersey sets.

I think full-timers can pay just like everyone else.

some teams chip in and pay for the goalie making his fee $0; while others would offer the goalie a reduced fee.

personally, i am not interested in subsidizng the goalie 100% - I could get on board with a fee reduction as it might cost me an extra $20.

Never charge a spare goalie though.

I dont' charge goalies in shinny, that being said, i think they shouldn't be exempt from bringing the beer once in awhile. Full time goalies however should pay.

Another question off topic sort of, How much are people willing to pay for shinny in the evenings?
