Amazingly bad footwork and a complete inability to anticipate the play. Terrible dman and one of the worst decisions made by Feaster to give this guy any contract.

I'm not. Our defensive group is not very good, and our top 4 posted numbers that were far from respectable. And no, I don't think you can put it all on the goalies and forwards.
While a different coach might have had different preferences, that's always the situation with borderline players. Babchuk did nothing to earn playtime over the stellar trio of Smith, Sarich and Butler.

Furthermore, Babchuk has received slightly over 3 minutes of total PP time this year. Only reason Babchuk is in the NHL is because of his ability to produce on the PP and if you don't put him on the PP it's only natural that his weaknesses outweigh his strengths.
|
That is true, but I can't see our PP being much better than it was last season, so there was little need for him on the PP. In Hartleys opinion the marginal improvement we might have gotten from putting Babchuk on the PP was not worth the risk he brought to our own end, and I see no fault in that logic.
It sucks for Babchuk, and yes, in some other team he might have seen more icetime. However, that is just further indication that he is a borderline player; not bad enough to be right out, not good enough to be right in.

For a guy like Babchuk, there probably is a better living to be made in the KHL. Although a guy that slow on the bigger ice...maybe theres a reason he was only getting one year deals over there.
Was never a fan of that White/Babchuk deal when it happened. I would have rather seen White dealt for picks as at least it gives you a chance to find something useful, whereas Kosto and Babchuk were what they were. But that was the team's perogative at the time.

As disappointing as he has been, he pretty much came as advertised. He's a PP specialist simply because he has a good shot. He's a big defenseman with good offensive skills and a booming shot. That's pretty much it. He can be an offensive producer but he's a defensive liability, streaky, and inconsistent in his efforts so he is going to sit from time to time. He needs to play sheltered minutes and be on the PP, but the Flames don't have the luxury. I still think he can be a 5th defenseman in the NHL and definitely a 6th/7th defenseman who can come into the lineup and play on the 2nd PP and offer an offensive element, but Babchuk won't be happy with that because he thinks he's better than that. Babchuk should be used like Marc-Andre Bergeron. It's a mistake for Feaster to think that Babchuk would suddenly mature into a top 4 defenseman.
|
MAB is small but can skate. Defenseman that can skate will always have a place but if you can't skate your aren't going to be a regular in the league. He's not an NHL defenseman and I find is funny that some actually defend this guy. I will say I commend him for never raising a stink over the past couple of years but this isn't a story of two coaches that didn't like the guy it's the story of two NHL coaches that probably can't believe this guy is even on the roster and gave him a permanent seat in the press box.

why?
I'd rather the flames give the last guy on the D depth chart in the entire organization the ice time, just to see what we've got, than to give icetime to a guy we all know isn't here next year.

Because if we are going to be a bottom 4 team in the league, I think he could be a key ingredient over players that are hungry and fighting for jobs.

haha good point. Wish tanguay was back in the lineup for the same reason. We need our crappy vets continuing their garbage play to get think tank job rite.

I guess I feel kind of bad for him but I know that we can find a whole lot better way to spend that two and a half million next year.

How bad is the KHL to want this guy on their team?
He should be selling meat at a butcher in Prague.

Babchuk wasn't ruined by Sutter, he's just not very good. He's got that bomb from the point but was never the type to join the rush and is a mediocre defenceman.
