Even if Kiprusoff does come back, the team will be spending just over 3 million on the position.

Why would the flames carry 3 goalies?
With the cap going down the extra $300k could be huge for another team trading for him. If there was ever a year that a veteran backup should make league minimum its next year.
Its not a bad signing because i don't really have faith in Feasters " best goalies outside of the NHL". My only complaint would be that i don't believe Feaster had to pay more than minimum.

Kipper to announce his retirement shortly? His salute to the fans at the end of the game said it all. He's done. This move just puts an exclamation mark on that feeling.

Joey's been good this year. and it'll be good to have some East Coast salt water in the lineup again next year.

I don't really get this signing. Sure MacDonald's played well, but he's not going to be a long term option so why not move on and let the young guys play so that we can find that future starter faster? I'd be happier giving Ramo and Bera the reigns. If neither worked out, we could always sign or trade for a MacDonald calibre veteran as they're not difficult to find. And really, if neither worked out, we could probably find someone better than MacDonald to be our starter for the next few years.

Roger Millions @RogMillions MacDonald's extension further evidence #Flames believe Kiprusoff will retire at end of season.

Why would Joey sign for minimum rather than test the free agent waters? 300k is a small premium for getting him signed before that

I think you'd have a hard time finding a goalie at league minimum.
$1m is pretty much to going rate, or even a little low compared to guys like clemmenson or labarbera (I think comparable)
925k is also right around the threshold that doesn't count against the cap when in the minors.

That's a lot of goalies.

I don't see Irving and Taylor sticking around. Kipper is probably gone. Ortio and Brossoit will most likely not be competing for the big club this year. Realistically, the Flames are left with Ramo, Berra, and MacDonald.

I'm a little surprised it's a one way contract but with the new CBA, it isn't hard to call up any players anymore.

Personally not a huge fan of this move but its a meh, was hoping for Kipper and Ramo/Berra but I guess this makes Kippers retirement a certainty. Even still we'll have Ramo/Berra/Mac on one way deals so they'll be forced to burn a contract and pay decent dollars on an older guy in the A because as an earlier poster said, 1 mil for a career backup isn't going anywhere on the waiver wire.
Maybe Ramo is asking for huge dollars.
Berra/MacDonald tandem is a little scary.

They aren't going to be very good next year and might as well figure out if one of them is worth keeping beyond that.
If they need to trade him next year and another team can't swallow 300k prorated for some reason, the flames could always retain it in a trade.

Considering he's been a solid backup to the point of being a temporary starter, this is well deserved. The extra 300k is a weak point considering if we have to, we could keep the 300k to get value.

This is basically a steal taking advantage of MacDonald getting the backup/journeyman tag.
In 2012-13 he played every bit as well as Howard backstopping the same Red wing team.
This year his numbers have been as good as Kipper.
Howard signed a 6 year deal for a cap hit of 5.3M for a team that is basically in the same re-build/ reload mode as the Flames.
Howard will be 35 years old making 4.2M
This is a great signing. MacDonald is liable to beat out Ramo and Berra as the Flames #1 goalie next year.

He's like the Rick Tabaracci of the 21st century Flames: Decent goalie and thoroughly decent guy stuck out of his depth as the default #1 G on a team destined to stink for at least 2 years. Better he get shelled than one of the young goalies and have the confidence beaten out of them. MacDonald's our sacrificial lamb, and seems to have the character and attitude to handle it.

Anyone think Ramo has decided to stay in KHL making more money? I know the window hasn't opened yet to sign him, but maybe he told Feaster he's no coming over.

There's no way in hell the Flames going into camp next year 2 with less than 50 games of NHL experience amongst all their goalies would be considered a good idea.
If not MacDonald it would have been someone like him and he's played well enough in his career to be able to get a shot same as Ramo and Berra.

There a lot of goalies on the market in the summer of the same calibre. I think they should have waited until camp to see what Berra and Ramo would bring before signing a back-up/3rd string goalie.
There will probably still be some UFA goalies by mid-September, and there are bound to be a few on waivers before the start of the season. I get that MacDonald is a good team guy, but we can do better.

Ramo and Berra should have to earn their spot. This forces them to do so. If both are ready and better than McDonald then you can easily send McDonald down if no one takes him on waivers. Just handing guys a job who have no NHL experience and could be the next Karlsson doesn't male sense.
