Got to love the Halifax Chronicle Herald's editorial cartoon today. Raylene Rankin, Stompin' Tom and Jay Smith (guitarist for Matt Mays). It's been a difficult few weeks for East Coast music.

I did neither. It was an honest question. Did it come across as a complaint? Why not just answer it, or are we feeling a little defensive tonight?

She earned the politically correct public tributes but privately in our addled minds . . . . . we're all wonderng how big the coffin has to be and glad we're not pallbearers.
Cowperson
While Cowperson and Silver took some flack for poking fun at Rita's weight, they weren't the only ones.
In a hand written letter from Rita herself:

She had a good sense of humor about her weight (as a person with a weight problem myself I understand having good humor about it; mind you I do think it's easier to be abnormally underweight than overweight).
A friend of mine posted a story to Facebook that after Rita sang the national anthem during the Jays/Phillies World Series a Philadelphia sports writer wrote that they should have brought her out on a forklift. Rita's response was "if I'm ever asked to sing the national anthem at a Blue Jays game again, I want to be brought out on a forklift, just because".
So I guess my point is, you can forgive the weight jokes, if they're funny Rita would have appreciated them.

I heard that teapot story on the news last night and I had a good chuckle.
It's a rare Maritimer that hasn't got a good sense of humour, so I'm not surprised Rita could make a joke about herself.

I appreciate that you posted this. I had thought it was common knowledge she had fun with her weight. I didn't want to fly in here and start a debate defending my joke right away because that would have derailed the thread and I was caught off guard at the offense taken to the remark. Now that a little time has passed - and because you posted this - I thought I'd better come back in and just let everybody know that my comment wasn't meant to be as malicious as it was interpreted.
I love when a Canadian makes a name for him/herself on the international stage or otherwise makes it big - especially when they become stars in the Excited States. Yes, that even includes Justin Bieber. Lots have made it big as actors. R.I.P., Rita, you were a great Canadian who was taken too soon.
