My friend and her 3 little kids were in Boston to watch that. Thankfully, I've been in touch and she wasn't near and is ok. Was absolutely terrified until she let us know she was ok.

Im just speculating of course but I don't think it has anything to do with the marathon but more to do with people knowing that this would be a place where lots of people would be at and it would get a lot more attention/coverage this way.

Really hoping this was caused by a generator or something of the like. Not that it makes it any less tragic, it just would make it a little less unnerving for me to get on the subway or attend a big event.

Marathon "suspended". Surely they should cancel it now.

Be careful believing twitter feeds. As we've frequently seen, the echo chamber of twitter seems to lead to misinformation and half-truths spreading as fast or faster than real information.

I know a couple who traveled there to compete this year. Praying they are alright, what terrible news.

3 fatalities so far according to fox news.

I was in Boston in 2010 and 2011 to watch my dad do the marathon. From the pictures the explosion area is very close to where my family used to watch the finish line. That area is also very tightly packed with spectators

This wasn't a generator, or something like that. The explosion was much too big, plus there were two explosions within seconds of each other at the same place.

This is appalling. Who and why would someone do such a thing? Feel sick for those caught in the blast.

CNN is now reporting that they are checking for another possible device at the Mandarin Hotel?

Got messages from a few friends who raced. All ok but one group had just left that area and heard the explosion.
Just awful.

Not that I think it was a generator, but 2 explosions within seconds of each other at the same place actually sounds more like what would happen if 2 generators were by each other.

I would assume there are issues with making sure all of the people out on the course can be moved safely. I assume most are 20 or so miles in at least, so you have issues of dealing with exhausted people in cold weather, which could create a whole new medical problem.

Some people are animals.

I am very interested to see who claims responsibility.
