It's not like the flames will give Byron a one way contract. Byron will play for the heat, where he will be needed if Horak, Sven and Reinhart play with the big club. He can be used as a call up or as filler in a trade package.
I feel sorry for him because this month was probably his best chance to show if he could make it in the NHL or not.

Hartely seems to like Butler and i would presume Feaster has not given up on him. I will not be surprised if they offer him a 2year contract at $1.8 million a year.
I wonder what kind of contract Brodie is going to get?

When I fiddle around on CapGeek, I usually pencil him at around $1.5 to 2.0 million per.
Can't see it being much more than that, even with how solid he's been this season.

That's pretty much where i would pencil him in also. I personally don't think Feaster is a good negotiator, and i could see Brodie's agent getting his client $2.5 - $3 million.

IMO, on the right wing, and we also have a severe deficiency when it comes to size and grit.
Well, then we should probably think twice about cutting loose a gritty 23 year old, 6'4 220+ lb right winger before giving him a serious look at the NHL level.
|
He has been awful in his few NHL games this year looking about 3 steps slow and not providing any grit or agitating that he is supposed to be so good at.
From most reports in the AHL, and evidenced by healthy scratches, he has been bad to awful in the AHL as well.
He has had plenty of time to show that he is able to contribute and what he is and so far he has shown that he is a borderline AHL guy and nowhere close to the NHL.
I get that people have bee sucked into his story for some reason but this guy at best has been worse and offers less than Nemisz and likely has been much worse.

Because he can skate and actually brings an aspect of the game the Flames can use. Nemisz is a bust and will never become anything valuable. Another Chucko.

There are some UFAs needing to be signed or not as well.
Danny Taylor
Michael Testwuide
Kris Kolanos
Ben Walter
Steve Begin
Joey MacDonald
Bret Carson
Brian McGratton
Anton Babchuk
Roman Cervenka
Of those I'd give Joey MacDonald a one way contract. McGratton a two way and Begin another camp try out.
I'm not sure about Taylor, Cervenka and Carson but the rest can walk.
We'll have Ferland, Turner Elson and Ortio probably returning to the Heat and new players such as Hanowski, Ramage, Granlund, Wotherspoon, and Brossoit that we will have to make room for.

I'm quite surprised by folks not wanting Carter Bancks. Sounds like he's a great teammate for the Heat and hearing from guys like PMM, it would have been nice to see him get a call up to Calgary.

I'd give Nemisz another year, he had some injury trouble, and I think if he can turn into a defensive forward, he still has some value.

We won't get anything for Butler so may as well keep him around as a 7/8th D for in case of injuries etc.

McGratton should definitely be brought back. Watcher of the youth.

I think the only obvious RFAs let go are Irving, Cameron and Patterson
|
You can fill out an AHL roster without offering NHL contracts. If Bancks/Patterson are good teammates and don't stunt the progress of our legit prospects, no harm in offering them AHL deals - but no NHL deal as we need that flexibility. Look at SJ - they were able to sign up and coming college kids as they had contract room. We have to be cautious and watch the contract limit and subsequently miss out on prospects like Rylan Schwartz because we only have so much room and are holding it open for Langaniere. Would much rather keep an opening for an up and coming college kid than a professional AHLer.

Trade Butler for the highest draft pick you can get and make room for Cundari in the line-up next season. I want a more physical presence in the the 5th and 6th slots.

Who plays on our bottom pairing then? Smith? Sarich? Butler at similar dough isn't that bad. Kid will never shake off the Regehr deal here, maybe best to deal him but can't let him go for zip.

Breen and Cundari should be up full time next year. Or for parts of it. Either way, butlers spot should go to Breen, the big and mean kind of D-man the Flames are looking for.

I really only care about ensuring Backlund, Brodie, and Cundari are re-signed. I'd like to see Cundari to see what he can do. I'm relatively indifferent to the rest.

I'd like to see Cervenka on the team with a full-camp, his health, and a clearly defined role. This season was kind of a waste for him. But I won't lose sleep if he's not back either.
The rest can leave.

Lance Bouma should be brought back as well, easily. He played 27 good games last year for the Flames and the only reason he wasn't on the team this year was because he got a season ending injury three games into his season in the minors.
Nemisz deserves to be qualified on a one-year, two-way deal. Only 22, let's see if he bounces back and gets back on track.

Because he's not physical he's not good with the puck, he brings Zero intensity and has zero hockey sense. He's a decent skater. Beyond that, he does nothing well at the NHL level.
