I always liked 4th & Vine Bistro near Oliver Square, but it looks like it recently closed down.

Try The Hardware Grill at 9698 Jasper Ave.

Murietta's is always nice, but you can go there in Calgary or Canmore.

Go to Tres Carnales for some great Mexican food.

Edit - Never mind, I didn't read your post properly. But my suggestion still stands.

Piccolino's is pretty good for Italian.

My go-to's for lunch are DaDeO's, Tasty Tom's, Sloppy Hogg's, Tres Carnales, Barb & Ernies

I work downtown and here is where i like to take my clients

Lux for a steak sandwich. Good at lunch
Madison's Grill for a more fancy relaxed atmosphere. Underrated gem.
Manor Cafe if you are closer to 124th street. Highly recommended

Ruths Chris, hardware grill, and Pampas (brazilian steakhouse) are also around. Chop just opened in a nely renovated space in the Utton Place Hotel, but so far it has been meh...

For Italian, pazzo pazzo is ok. Piccolino's is great. Sorrentino's is there, but tends to be grossly over garlic'd, which is awful if you are going back to work.

If you need more or want to run a suggestion past me basedon the type of client, pm me.

This should be a short thread.

In all seriousness, maybe the cheemo perogies plant has a takeout window.

i also take clients to the 100 club. KC is bang on about Chop; i was really looking forward to a classy lunch place on the north side of downtown and both times i have been in there i have been disappointed. maybe it will get better but for the cost of things i haven't actually been impressed.

If your near West Ed anyway, the hotel restaurant is quite nice. Since it's touristy you do get some schleps in there, but the staff and the food try to make it classy. Black tie that sort of thing.

Plus doing business at a hotel bar is about as standard as it comes.

Good lamb, decent seafood (as decent as Alberta gets anyway).

Lux Steakhouse downtown is good. Von's is also good off Whyte Ave.

For Italian, Corso 32 is outstanding, probably the best restaurant in the city but you probably need to make reservations a month in advance.

A more accessible (and great) place for Italian is Violino at 124 St.

Ya, if you're around West Ed there isn't a lot in terms of singular, unique places. The Keg, etc.. You may as well actually go into the mall on Bourbon Street to the restaurants there and at least enjoy the view.

Saw Lingnan got mentioned, I concur. IMO best Chinese in the city. Lux, as mentioned, has good steaks, though its kind of a DB downtown "Sex and the City" martini bar type scene in there. Reminds me of a Moxie's commercial.

One place by downtown we discovered for Mexican/Salvadorean is called El Rancho. It's in an older, slightly run down area, but the place is refurbished and very good, its a family run place, with good prices. Whenever we're there, seems like over half the patrons are Latino, which tells me its probably good, authentic food.

The 100 club is pretty good for what you're looking for downtown. I'm not familiar with anything other than chain restaurants in the west end.

Another place I just remembered in the West End if you like Greek food: Syrtaki's, on Mayfield Road, probably 5min from West Edmonton Mall. Kind of pricy as Greek food tends to be, but great food and a cool setting in there too.

Was this really needed? Have you ever lived here? You're of no help to this thread.

Having only just moved to Canada's Frozen Wasteland I don't have a lot of recommendations.

Downtown: Lazia - http://www.lazia.ca/ - It's pricey but decent food. Is a step down from Lux and Chop but better than Ricky's or Red Robin. They haven't specialized (they call it fusion cuisine) so if you have a group where one person wants Asian and one wants Mexican. Lazia is the place. I only ate there once for dinner and the food was good. I tried at lunch once and it was packed, which might have been spill over from the E&C shutting down in the city centre mall.

Whyte Ave - for clients some places have been mentioned (Murietta's, Chiantti's, BP's). The Keg is in that area too. A less formal place that we love is Famoso. Famoso serves thin crust pizza and has Stella on tap.

I made a bet with a co-worker that the Flames would finish ahead of the Oil this year. Looks like I will be buying us a steak lunch at Chop very soon. I can give a review after I go but everything might taste like bitter defeat.

Chicken for Lunch is crazy in a good way. Co-workers talked about the dry spicy chicken like it was crack. Don't go on a payday friday or you will be lined up for 20-30 min. Bring cash, no debit.

I was told if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all. I went to Edmonton about three dozen times last year with work, never had a outstanding meal at any of the restaurants there. Although I only dined downtown, so that could be part of the problem.

Their culinary jewel Hardware Grill is meah, think of it as Calgary high end cuisine in 2002. Had the Kobe beef burger and it was just ok for lunch, had dinner there many times, either have eaten something on that dinner menu, or sat with someone who has. All of it was just ok. No one from Calgary ever raved about that place.

Not trying to be a homer, but IMO Calgary lapped Edmonton on food in the past 3 years. So I found eating out there to be a little underwhelming. I've been to Lux, Sabor, 100 bar, and didn't really find anything that great. Again, that is all downtown. Some have mentioned out of downtown spots, so for sure go there. I wanted to try Red Ox Inn, but never got there.

I guess that is a bit off topic, but is a favorite rant of mine. I do have 2 suggestions however, Chopped Leaf downtown in Commerce Place serves awesome healthy lunch, and Credo coffee has very good coffee and baked goods. That was my staple towards the end.

Praha Cafe on Jasper Ave - great Czech place

Also there is an awesome mexican place downtown as well (cant remember the name) - still trying to find a good one in Calgary.

I live here (unfortunately) and do eat out a lot so here is my two cents.

1) Corso 32 is overrated, and if you want to eat there, you have to make reservations well in advance.

2) Lingnan is not chinese food, its westernized chinese food. If you want real Chinese food, stick to the stuff in Calgary (I grew up there), it's much better.

3) Italian restaurants - ton to choose from, I personally like Oliveto Trattoria - a restaurant tucked away in the Suburbs. I also heard good things about Antonio's by Nelly's but I have not tried it. Sicilian's Pasta Kitchen and Il Pisticchio downtown are good (Sicilian's on the southside is so-so). I found Piccolino's underwhelming but people tend to like it. Pazzo pazzo was underwhelming for me as well but have friends that love their pizza. I tend to stay away from chains but Chianti's is fine if you happen to go on a Monday or Tuesday (good value although the food is not really that good).

4) Steak houses - to be honest, you can't go wrong with the Keg in terms of value. Century Grill and Lux are ok but overpriced. Von's is also a bit pricey but at least the quality seems better. There is always Ruth Chris - but they are in essentially every city in North America it seems (buttery goodness but really pricey). Moose factory is a decent steak for good value if you go on the right day (i think their special is a Monday).

5) Unique to Edm - Dadeo's has great Southern comfort food with Po Boys (blackened catfish is delish). Guess there are no more Red robins in Calgary either so that is another place that's unique here now. Tropika here is decent as well (much better than the one that closed down in Calgary).

6) Fine dining - Manor Cafe - too overpriced, Character's - inconsistent, Blue Pear - above average, Jack's Grill - decent, little overpriced, Culina's - affordable, decent lamb, Sabor Divino - overpriced but their seafood platter is fun to eat, Unheard of - also inconsistent, Cafe de ville - the pastries are the best, main meals are just ok.

Overall, agreed with one of the posters, in terms of really good fine dining - Calgary is much better - I can safely say that Charcut and Rouge were both better than any of the restaurants I have tried in Edmonton.

Hope that helps and not too overwhelming a read.. ... only with writing that do I realize how much money I waste on eating out.... LOL

I would guess that you are referring to Tres Carnales, I haven't tried it but friends have told me that it is quite good and unique to Edmonton as well.
