Arnold is much less of a sure thing to make it to the NHL, so getting a degree is going to be more important to him. I like him, but I'm hoping that he can spend the next year developing the pysical side of his game since he'd be a 3rd line guy at the NHL level.

Pretty sure there was an article not too long ago that stated Gaudreau and his family had planned on having him finish his degree before turning pro.

He probably also still wants to take advantage of another year of campus tail.

As of last week, he was still weighing his options.

“I know I really enjoy it here at BC,” said Gaudreau, a fourth-round pick, 104th overall, from the 2011 NHL draft. “I know Calgary is a really awesome place to be, a really fun hockey city. So both of my options are win-win. But I really want to get education, so that’s something I’m really taking into consideration. But I’d really like to get a chance to play for the Flames.

“So I’m not really sure right now. I’m just kind of playing it by ear.”

So is he eligible to be at Flames training camp next year?

If he does really well there can he not be signed prior to preseason?

the confirmation is based on this tweet from the Assistant Dean of BC School of Management

Warren K. Zola ‏@WarrenKZola 2h Beware 2013-14 @BostonCollege hockey opponents, there shall be no early defections to the @NHL from Coach York's squad this year.

Does this mean that we still run the risk of him walking away from the Flames if we don't get him signed in the next few years? How long do we have his rights for?

Good decision by Johnny, by his own admition that this year was the first time he really played 2 way hockey. He said he has mostly just focused on offense until he came to BC last season.

Too small to make the jump to the AHL. Hopefully he hits a growth spurt or puts on more mass on his legs.

5'6 141 lb will get bruised up in the NHL.

There are only 2 players under 160 lbs currently in the NHL.
5'6 Paul Byron of the Flames of course is the smallest player for weight in the NHL 153lb
Tyler Ennis is next at 157 lb.

The Theo comparison 5'6 180 lb is a bit of a jump to Johnny's weight.

No. He would void his NCAA scholarship in the process. With this announcement, why would you think he has any designs on attending training camp?

So this isn't really official? I don't think that it would be a bad decision for him to stay at BC, but I'd assumed that he'd wait to talk to Feaster in Pittsburgh this weekend and to see if he wins the Hobey Baker award before making a final decision.

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but NHL clubs have 4 years to sign college prospects. This allows them to complete their education if they choose. It can be a bit confusing given the difference in time frame for signing prospects drafted from major junior leagues.

it appears the tweet is from someone of stature at Boston College

"Expert in sports law, business of sports, the NCAA & student-athletes transitioning to the pros. Assistant Dean, Boston College’s Carroll School of Management."

Anyways, BC is adding some high end recruit for 2013/14, including Ian McCoshen, who is likely a late 1st or early 2nd round pick this coming draft, as well as Thatcher Demko and Steve Santini who are on Team USA for this summers U18 championships. Arnold, Gaudreau and co. should have a strong team again next year

Not Flames' training camp (NCAA would void him, or the college seasons starts - forget which one) but he should be at the Prospect camp.

Good move for both Johnny and Bill. Johnny could use at least another year to bulk up a bit, and Arnold will just have another year of having even more responsibilities on the team, and hopefully continuing to have a lot of offensive opportunities. I think Arnold is definitely AHL ready (MAYBE could play 4th line in the NHL even) but another year at getting legitimate offensive opportunities and being a key guy on the team can't hurt his development and confidence, that's for sure.

No, he can come to training camp or at least prospect camp... he just has to make sure that the Flames don't give him anything to do it (has to pay his own way, his own accomadations, return any and all gear they let him use).

When Nugent-Hopkins looks like Davey-Boy Smith next to you, it's prob best not to turn pro yet.

Isn't his brother playing there next year, too? I'm guessing that played a fairly major part in his decision as well.......try to win a championship with his brother.

Good on him. An additional year (or two if he wants to finish his degree) will do him good.

Probably the right move, but remember this doesn't lock him into anything. If he develops over the summer he could be signed at any point.
