Interesting. In my earlier post I didn't mention kid friendly, but on our honeymoon we were surprised how many young families and kids there were at the resort - definitely kid friendly.

Went to Principe Tulum for a wedding in August. Was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. There were 40 of us plus about 6 kids. Worked out great. Just have fun with the beach chairs, people go out there as early as possible and place towels on huge groups of them. Most were all gone by 10am. Food was great as was the service

The reason for the Barcelo being so popular is it was the first pick of resorts in the area, so it has the BEST beach, its quite large so no worries about crowded pools, beaches, and has of course due to its size many restaurants, pools, kids areas, etc..
The nicest part we found for the wedding was people could pay $1500 for a week, up to what some of us paid $2500 for a week in the higher end area of the resort.

Was that awkward? I want to upgrade for an upcoming wedding but am not sure if it will be awkward if you sit in the exclusive beach area, drink the top shelf liquor and eat in the better bars and restaurants while the rest of the group looks on in sadness.

No, the cool thing is the only thing exclusive to the higher end part was the restaurants and buffets.
The pools and bars were all available to anyone who wanted them, the benefits were just a fancy room, fancy hotel and more services included in that area.

In addition, through the Barceló All Inclusive programme you will be able to access all the facilities in the pool and beach area of the Barceló Maya Colonial hotel and Barceló Maya Tropical hotel (except for the hotel's buffet and speciality restaurants).

Ran into this at the Ritz in Cayman, the Brits would hit the pool @ 6:30 am and not show up till 11 or noon. We used to just chuck them on the pool deck.

Barcelo is in a good location for the guests also. In the middle of most things people are going to want to do and day trips are easy from there to Tulum and Playa is just down the road. There is really good snorkelling right off the beach and lots of things to do at the resort but easy to venture off as many guests will want to do. Going to this area again in a couple of months. Can't wait! Heard parts of Cozumel are still in rough shape from the last hurricane and not fully repaired yet. I think most other areas weren't effected nearly as much.

Lol, we would always do this at the Riu resorts!
Last few times there were guys trips and we'd get to the pool at 9 and just scoop up all the towels and put them in a pile! The best part was the reactions of everyone else when they would all show up for their chairs!

Best friend got married there, about 30 of us, it was a great time and an amazing resort. Great thing is you can get standard to fancy rooms so there is something for every budget.

+1
Know 3 couples who got married at this resort. Everyone who stays seem to really like it.
Tip: do a small civil ceremony before going to avoid blood tests and other less than desirable Mexican requirements.
