That has nothing to do with the trade.

Of course it does, Pronger was the guy who kept the Oilers from being in the lottery in 2006. He covered up a lot of mishaps by the goaltenders. It should be no surprise that they sucked for 7 years straight without him.

Solid deal for the Oilers and one less guy on the trade market.

Ugh. Yeah you're right they should have just kept him.

I originally hated the Pronger trade. I thought we should have held out for a young Getzlaf. However, it's worked out pretty well, getting some great pieces for a lying POS guy whose wife decided she didn't want to be here.

Nice signing, good price for a 2nd pairing guy who works hard and sacrifice the body every game. I guess he chose Edm and signed at a "discount" compare to what he would get as a UFA.

Was hoping he'd go to UFA.

And would have been happy to see him in Calgary.

This team needs some defensive defenders.

Pretty fair signing for both sides and good term.

Smid is usually near the top end for defensmen in hits and blocked shots. Type of player any team could use on a second pairing and something the Oilers need.

Ladislav Smid- 15th in league for hits, 7th for blocked shots, has the best +/- of all Oiler Dmen in home games, only 27, loves playing for the Oilers, hates the Flames & Flames hate him lol, all for $3.4m & no NT/NM clauses, great dressing room guy & would take a puck in the teeth for any team mate. For an Oil fan what's not to love about that!

Seriously? He's okay but I would have been pissed if Feaster handed him $14 million over 4 years. He's only top 4 in Edmonton because of their situation of having no top defensemen.

Would you rather have Dennis Wideman for $26.25 million over 5 years and with an NTC?

Granted, Smid wouldn't be a good fit within the current defence roster.

But if Bouwmeester gets traded, the Flames defence goes from not-great to not-acceptable. And Smid would go a long way towards stopping he bleeding. And as a hard hitting defensive defenceman, he brings an element that is seriously deficient on the Flames.

I would rather have Wideman because he's a better defenseman and is a powerplay QB. Wideman plays 5 more minuts a game and has 14 more points this season and you aren't going to get a 40 point defenseman for chump change. Defensively the entire Flames team sucks but that's more to do with the failures of the coaching staff as Brent had pretty well the same group always in the top 10-15.

That contract reminds me a lot of the Sarich contract that never really worked out that great for the Flames. Smid is not a bad defenseman but I wouldn't lock him up for four years.

I think that Sarich's contract worked out well enough for the Flames except for the very last year, and was overall a good signing. I think he played a very valuable role on the team, by effectively baby-sitting players like Giordano, Babchuk, and Brodie, which allowed the coaching staff to play them in more important situations.

Plus he made a few game-changing hits every season.

Granted, I think Sarich was better than Smid. But I think he can play a similar role, which is one this team will need moving forward with a roster consisting of not-overly-physical, puck-moving, primarily offensive defenders.

And I think a 4 year deal for a 27 year old defenceman is a good term.

Unfortunately, I think this is yet another in a series of decent signings by the Oilers, that are not great but are a net positive to the team.

Always liked Smid after watching him on Oil Change....he just hated losing.

Looks like a desperation move by the Oilers in their attempt to sign Breez and the Flames benefit.

If only to refute TKB's sentiment in the other thread. Looks like Flames fans were generally positive on Smid and this signing.
