Won't happen now, but would Flames fans have been okay with it if the Flames sent Iggy to the Canucks straight up for Kassian? Would that have been a better return than what we ended up with?
One of my Canuck friends actually suggested this prior and I thought that it wasn't a terrible idea.

No Thanks. Kassian at his best won't be as good as Iginla at his, but he will be better than Iginla now.

You think Kassian in his prime would be able to be the leading scorer on the current Flames team? That's honestly laughable.

I wonder if all of the Canucks fans started laughing at us when we sent Baertschi down.

Sven Baertschi was not acquired in a trade for the Flames top prospect who has since gone on to approach point/game numbers in his second NHL season. People are laughing because Zack Kassian was the other end of a lop-sided trade. People are laughing because the Canucks most pressing current need is presently playing centre in Buffalo, where Sabres fans don't spend many days pining the loss of Zack Kassian.

I watched Kassian a lot in the AHL during the lockout, and have kept a bit of an eye on him during the NHL season.
I definitely see what Gillis saw in this guy, and I'm not nearly so sure that this trade will end up being as one-sided and people here are making out.
He's big, and he's good, and he's young.
Even if he never progresses from here, I'd say that he's already better than Comeau, Jackman, Bouma, Aliu, and Begin, ie every other forward in the Flames' system who plays a distinctly physical role.

And no, I wouldn't have been happy with that. But yes, it would have been better than the actual return. I am very not happy with the actual return.
I would have been happy with Kassian and a good asset (ie 1st/2nd round pick, or a solid prospect) in return for Iginla.

People are laughing because they're idiots who don't understand that when you get hurt, are out for 8 games and need to get back up to speed before getting into the lineup and are waiver-exempt, you get sent to the AHL affiliate to get some ice time before they bring you back up.
It's not a demotion, it's a conditioning stint, and he'll be back up in a week or so.

To answer your question, NO! I would not be okay with it because Iginla means too much to this franchise to trade him to a hated division rival, that means no Oilers, no Canucks.
But I would trade Penguins' 1st, Agostino, and Hankowski straight up for Zach Kassian. Kassian is exactly the type of "prospect"/young player the Flames need. If previous drafts are any indication, you won't get a player like Kassian late in the first round (a guy like Tom Wilson went 16th last season) unless you get lucky in later rounds. And it's not like prospects with Kassian's size and skill set are a dime a dozen either.
From what I saw of Kassian, he's going to be an NHL player, likely a nice, physical top 6 player, a meaner post-Canuck version of Bertuzzi. He's inconsistent which makes his upside questionable, but he has one of the nicest skillsets I've seen in a "power forward prospect" in a while. Compared to other power forwards his size and age, I think he's top 3 in terms of combination of size, physical play, skating, shot, puck protection, fighting, and playmaking. But of course that can mean little since he's still a prospect.
Honestly, I didn't like the Hodgson trade at the time since I felt the Canucks traded a useful player for a player who won't contribute to their playoff run and they should aim to win now, but after seeing them get run over by Boston, I felt Mike Gillis had the right idea. You need guys like that in your lineup.

But I thought he was gonna be a tougher, more skilled Lucic.
Was Lucic ever demoted to the AHL?

I hate the Canucks as much as the next guy but this thread is pretty sad/pathetic.
"Hey losers who have finished higher than us in the standings for the last 5 years. That trading of a young center better than anyone in our system for another prospect in all honesty we could really use to rebuild our sinking ship of a franchise was soooo stupid.
Don't worry about who we just traded or who we got back for him. We are talking about you here"

They tried to demote him, but he didn't hear that he was being re-assigned because he was too busy doing shoulder presses

I don't think there were too many people who thought Kassian would be tougher than Lucic, but I think Kassian is more skilled than Lucic.

Looks like a demotion:
Farhan Lalji @FarhanLaljiTSN 3h AV re Kassian. "He could have played on Sat but I decided not to play him... His play prior to that (inj) had been fair at best" #canucks
Expand
Farhan Lalji @FarhanLaljiTSN 1h Gillis hopes Kassian will be back soon, "We need him to play a lot and get his feet moving. We'll need him in the playoffs" #canucks
I like him as a player but he is inconsistent. I still think the Sabres got the better end of the deal by a fair bit.

Calgary Flames fans are no longer allowed to comment negatively on other team's bad moves because they are fans of the Calgary Flames... got it.
