So how long before he is in a Flames uniform and playing in the NHL?

I predict he'll get some time in the NHL next season, but probably not to start the season.

It was great to see his progression during the World Juniors this year. He got more and more icetime as the tournament went on it seemed.

Yeah, that was his coming out party of sorts. Was a long shot to even make it, after he made the team everyone thought he'd be a depth guy, ends up playing good minutes and playing well.

He seemed to develop a more two-way game after being drafted as well.

Steinberg cleared this up:

Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg 3m @Adoc19 Still 48. Wotherspoon is still in junior so his contract doesn't count against the 50 contract limit. #Flames

I like Wotherspoon. He's not flashy. He's not "great" at any aspect of the game and his offensive tendencies need a bit of work. But he's a very reliable, low-risk defensive defender. Maybe Andrew Ference-ish.

my guess is 2 years from now. He'll get his time in the AHL, as most Dman should before playing D in the NHL.

Flames have until June 1st to sign fellow 2011 draftees Markus Granlund and Laurent Brossoit or they fall back to the 2013 draft.

He certainly has the size to play up on the NHL club at 6'2 209 lbs, I could see him up next season after a good stint in the AHL to get accustom to playing against men.

Added bonus: He's already familiar playing with Seth Jones.

Just please don't wait until May 26th to find out that they don't want to sign with Calgary...

If they don't intend to sign or can't get them to sign, they should consider them as throw in's I trades. They have to have some value.

No reason to think that any young player wouldn't want to sign with the Flames now. It's perfect timing for young guys to get a spot.

I think it is standard ... John Gibson 2011 2nd round pick of the Ducks, Alexander Kokolachev 2011 2nd round pick of the Bruins were signed to a 3yr contract with same yearly value according to cap geek

Interesting timing.

Playing the devil's advocate role, any chance, now that he's signed, its with the thought of moving him at the trade deadline as part of a bigger deal?

Seriously though, the timing is probably random. F.e. last season they signed Ferland in December.

I hope not but that's possibly an interesting twist...
