Table 5 is the winner. Encana bought those parking lots across from Petro Canada and will set up shop there.
Still, ECA will be moving out of some very prime locations (Bankers Hall, TD Tower)... I'll be there's a few people that would have preferred a Penny Lane location.

Anyone else wish they could build a new Calgary Tower that wouldn't be massively eclipsed by the office towers downtown?

The rumor I heard, yesterday, is that it will be twin 60-storey buildings.

Funny you'd say that... the Engineering Dept. at the U of C have a proposal to raise the Calgary Tower another 100 ft. Maybe one day, someone will blow some money on that.

That would rock. That's a lot of office space though.

from what i keep hearing is that its not two 60 stories, but one 60 story and one shorter tower...much like Petro Canada across the street.

So is it actually possible that the Calgary tower gets built higher? That would truly rule.

They needed a condenced building though, the three seperate buildings was a good idea at first when the company was in it's infancy, but there are so many problems with having one in Bankers, one in TD and one in the PanCan on 9th.
Although I really wonder who is going to fill the void that will be left by EnCana in terms of office space when the building is completed.

Two sixty story buildings and they'd be paying for it in 5 years.
Back in the day, Amoco was to build an exact 32 (approx) story tower as the one they have at 4 Ave and 2nd St now, across the street where Japanese Village is/was.
That was soon after the current one opened, and still had newly acquired Dome people still in Dome Tower, so they needed more room. Amoco had close to 2000 employees at the time, including my father. This was late 80's-very early 90's.
When I worked there one summer in the mid 90's in the building operations department, there was half that. Much less now, 10 years later after BP stepped in, and made Amoco a branch of the US operations, as oppsed to a Canadian entity.
I think they can fill the Encana space because its in 3 smaller spaces. Vacancy rates are about 5% or lower, so short term, those are some prime spaces.

At 1,670 feet, the Taipei 101 Tower in Taipei, Taiwan is currently the world's tallest building. Freedom Tower at the new World Trade Center in New York City is expected to rise 1,776 feet tall, including its enormous spire. (note the coincendence in height/year ),
However, if you count non-habitable space, I suppose you guys in Canada have it, with the CN Tower at 1,815 ft.
Also, I think someone on this message board mentioned it once, Samsung is scheduled to build an even taller building than the Freedom Tower which has yet to be completed. This tower in Dubai is expected to be 800 meters tall, or, 2624 feet.

I doubt anyone can actually fill that void - but it will definitely make the real-estate market downtown regress a little - right now Calgary has such a low vacancy rate...the new towers will make things easier for a bunch of companies I think (I know where I work we're running out of space fast, and can barely find room for everyone)

That's pretty easy, Al Markin of CNRL has said he want to bring CNRL under one roof. Right now they're in various floors of Bankers East, Sunlife, Home Oil, and Energy Plaza (although Horizon may have already moved). Having worked there, that's a shop that could definately use more space. I could see them taking over Encana Place.
As for the space CNRL would free up, the BH space is primo and would go in a blink. The rest of them are pretty attractive to Trusts and other small cap shops and would free up space nicely for the rest of the market.

don't forget guys, that with Imperial now moving to Calgary, it too will probably look to build a brand new tower consolidate its staff. There definitely might be atleast two major towers rising in Calgary within the new couple of years.

To be honest, Imperial could probalby swap space in 5th Ave Place with BP. BP's shrunk to a fraction of it's former self and really doesn't need that kind of room. I wouldn't be surprised if they sell off their remaining assets and exit Canada soon.
That said, Imperials still sitting on those Chinatown lots and has the land to build something. I wonder how having the Maid next door affects potential projects?
I'm all for updating our skyline, I'd just like something distinctive and memorable (in a good way) rather than the big box approach that resulted in TCPL...

Calgary needs about 500k sq-ft of new space every year these days, we also have one of the lowest vacancy rates in the world, or about 3%.
Encana will be 2M sq-ft, but will take ~5 years to finish.
Assuming 6% is a healthy vacancy rate, Calgary can not only handle Encana in stride but could easily take on ANOTHER 2M sq-ft of new space. That is without factoring in growth in the growth rate...
Crazy....
Claeren.
