Except while Tambellini was getting packages like a 1st (which became Klefbom) + Teubert + 3rd for Penner, management traded Jarome Iginla for half that value.
It's far worse.

I guess we have to wait until the trading is done and what´s left of the corpse of this team. If Kipper and JBo is gone additionally to Iginla, you probably are right. Calgary is the new Oilers without the high end talent.

Agree. Formula for the 2004 team: great group of young defensemen - none outstanding, but solid protection; some reasonably fast, hard checking forwards with modest scoring skills; one star player, one star goaltender.
So it's not impossible to obtain a pretty good team within a year or two, with good management (not a given, here).

The Flames have more assets than the Oilers did at that time and still have a chance to can their incompentent management before they do harm unlike the Oilers did hanging on to them. The iginla trade doesn't look great but not sure a meh prospect, an awful Teubert and a 3rd is the deal to bring up how we are far worse than the Oilers. We are certainly heading that way but still have enough time/moves to make to ensure it is not that bad.

The key is next week, how many assets can we multiply?
There's no point of keeping JBo, Gio, Tanguay, Cammi, Kipper etc. Sell them and see what prospects you can bring into the system. Some of them have to turn out ok.
Go after guys that will not have the greatest interest in the UFA + throw big money at Weiss.
P-M Bouchard
Clarke MacArthur
Mason Raymond
Toni Lydman
Doug Murray
Chris Summers
Anton Khudobin
Ray Emery
Baertschi-Weiss-Bouchard
Hudler-Backlund-Cerevenka
MacArthur-Stajan-Raymond
Aliu/Rinehart/Bouma/Horak
Wideman-Murray
Lydman-Brodie
Breen-Summers
Emery
Khudobin
Sell some of these guys next trade deadline and hope the likes of Backlund/Baertschi/out top 5 pick others int eh system are ready for the next step.

This team will be reshaped with free agents this off season. Hopefully we can clear some cap room so that we can take advantage of the falling cap and some of the quality free agents that will be available.

What quality free agents are available? Pickings looked slim last look I took at the upcoming list.

This management will always be very active with free agency. They will try to ice a competitive team every year. They've actually been pretty solid at picking up FAs. Wideman, Glencross, Hudler, Giordano, Tanguay, etc. They just need to stop away from the country club mentality with giving out extensions and almost automatic NMCs.
Plus I think Iginla will be back this off season, and at a vastly reduced price.
The great sell off, may just consist of Stempniak and one of Giordano or JBo, plus a lot of easily replaceable depth guys. Maybe Cammy too, but only if a first rounder is on the table.
So we may see a relatively similar team, but one with potentially four first rounders this year. The idea is not to tank for many years, but to take this shortened season and deep draft to stock up on badly needed prospects.

If this team is going to add quality vets over the summer they will rely on amnesty buyouts, and teams dumping good players for picks
I believe the jets/thrashers used the pick from the Kovy trade and some prospects to bring in Ladd and Buff in the hawks sell off
I think the flames work to acquire at least 1 more first for the next draft and use 2 picks on players and 1 pick in a trade

This is such a terrifying thought but these guys are probably so shortsighted that they think this is a good way to go.

It's a damn near guarantee that the Flames will not, at any point, have four first round draft selections for the 2013 draft.

Regehr and Leopold were outstanding defensemen and were regarded as such league-wide. Don't forget 2004 team had 3rd best GA with Turek/MacLennan in the net for 43 games. And "reasonably fast" is not strong enough to describe what was widely admitted to be one of the fastest teams in the league.

I think the next person that should be fired is Ken King. He's been around longer then anyone. It's his turn.

I wonder what guys like Hudler think of being a part of a rebuild.
Once the shock and sick feeling in the pit of my stomach for the last couple of days pass this whole thing might become sort of exciting; or at least it could if I had any faith in our management team going forward. I really hope they do something savvy.....soon (!)...so that I can start to get on board with this rebuild.

In 3 years time our team looks something like this
Open open open
Baerchi backlund hudler
Gaudreu jankoski open
Open open open
Open jbo
Brodie wideman
Open open
Open
The main needs are a number 1 defensemen maybe a number 2 defense if jbo is traded or cant be resigned or if gio cant step up to a top pairing guy. A number 1 center, and a number 1 goalie. The wingers can be replaced in free agency. This draft we need to get a franchise defenseman or franchise center. If we dont the rebuild will extend even longer.

Don't really see Gaudreau and Jankowski as 3rd liners. Doubt Bouwmeester will be here in 3 years. Here's my projection:
Baertschi/Gaudreau-Jankowski/Backlund-Hudler
Gaudreau/Baertschi-Backlund/Jankowski-Horak
Glencross-Reinhart/Arnold-Ferland
Bouma-Arnold/Reinhart-Aliu/Nemisz
XXXX-Brodie
Giordano-Wideman
Sieloff/Breen/Wotherspoon
Ramage/Culkin/Kulak
Ramo/Gillies/Brossoit
That's without including our top prospects from this upcoming draft.
A lot rides on Jankowski IMO. If he's a legit top two line centre in 3-4 years then we're not bad at centre. If he isn't then hopefully we're grabbing one this draft. If Jankowski pans out then our biggest needs are #1 d-man and franchise goalie. We have some guys who might turn out in goal but nobody with top pairing d-man potential outside of Brodie.
We need some more size up front. We need more size in the top 4 defense.
