What's kind of funny is that the past wasn't even that good. It's been kind of terrible. Soul crushing heartache and let downs. We've had one good year in pretty much a quarter of a century...and even that one is painful to think of. I guess us Flames fans are easy to please.

If staying a Flame is more important to him than winning a Cup, then I think we can rebuild without trading him... but we do need to rebuild.

I know, we've had 22 years of disappointments and frustrations with one year of good, and that was also disappointing.

only two things could change my opinion of Iggy: playing for Vancouver/Edmonton or walking away as a UFA, leaving Calgary with zero return.
Outside of that, Iggy will always be one of my favorite players in any sports.

Looks like. One significant run that ended in failure, and that bought the franchise goodwill for almost a decade so far.

I see no reason why a re build cannot include him as the veteran role model on the team. Young players need a veteran to teach them how to be a pro, on the ice, with the fans, the offseason and when no one is looking on the road. He has been the best we have ever seen in this franchise.
I want him to stay.

I'd much prefer him to stay but it's pretty tough watching him on this particular incarnation of the team. Would cheer for him either way.

Thank you to the OP. Was thinking of starting a thread like this. I do not want to see Iggy traded for all of the (sentimental) reasons expressed as well. Best Flame ever. I think he will waive if asked. But the thought of Edwards, Feaster, King etc. being the ones to make this decision makes me ill.

Then sign Jason Arnott in the off-season. Iginla's not the only professional in the league that young guys can learn from. If that's all you're keeping him around for, it's an expensive price to pay (both monetary and the loss of potential assets in return for him).

I don't want to see him go but he along with Kipper deserves a cup and won't win it in Calgary.

I love Iginla, I absolutely do. My absolute favourite player of all time, but, I'm excited to turn the page, get some prospects/picks and see where it goes.
It would be a shame if he ends up like Sundin, not only no cups, but walking away without netting the team something

Do I want him to get traded?........No. Do I want him to retire a Flame?.......Yes.
That said, I really want him to win a cup, and the fact of the matter is he's not going to do it here.

I am as pro Iggy as they come... but at the end of the day it's gotten to the point where it's best for him and it's best for the team if he goes and we get some young assets for him.
His chances of winning a cup here are slim to none in the foreseeable future.
If you're a fan of Iggy he deserves a shot at the cup and that is only going to happen if he goes elsewhere.
To watch him stay here and play on a line with a revolving door at the centre ice position of 3rd line centres, wingers and 4th line grinders is torture.
He deserves better.
The team has some rebuilding to do, and in this case - even if you're the most die hard fan of Iggy - I can't see how it wouldn't be best for him to go elsewhere.

None of this should be about him, it's about the fans

I've always wanted him to be a Flame for life.
But lately I've been thinking. What would I rather see? Iggy playing on a bottom feeder team, being the constant whipping boy for a few select fans, or play for the Cup in Pittsburgh, where he can truly be appreciated?
I wouldn't mind having something to cheer for this spring.

I would say few people actually WANT Iginla to leave. There are a few who think he is a 'horrible leader', or who is keeping the team down in some way.
I believe Iginla is the best player ever to suit up for this team. I believe that when Iginla goes, there will be some tears shed by many fans.
Iginla SHOULD have retired in Calgary. However, the Flames have not been able to build a good enough team. The Flames can't afford to have Iginla retire on the team, like Detroit was able to do with Yzerman and Lidstrom, or Colorado with Sakic.
Iginla DESERVES to win a championship - or at least another shot at it. Flames deserve to try and restock for the future. I don't want Iginla to go, but go he must now.
It is like when you are dating, and have been in a very long relationship. At one point, you look around and see that you are no longer a match for one another. That both people are giving up too much in order to stay together. This is Iginla and the Flames. They are both realizing that they have to go on and do what they need to do, and that means go their separate ways.
However, I surely hope they get back together in a year or two. Some couples just need some time apart after all
