The thing with Sven is that when the team is injury free there isn't an obvious spot for him. If the Flames want him as a regular, Feaster should have made room for him. By my count we have 7 or 8 natural LWs on our team.
|
I think it did set back, and I remember his rookie year, he was the poster boy for rushing 18 y/o's into the NHL.
As for Sven... this is just a bump in the road, but honestly if Feaster wasn't to have so many LWers on this team and resign every Stemp, Comeau and Jackman, then put Sven in the AHL... sitting doesn't kill your career, but playing is far far better.

Horak - 61 games in the NHL last year, this year 6 games so far and mostly kept in the AHL.
Brodie - broke out as top 4 last year; this year started off the season as a healthy scratch (very curious move) but Hartley has since corrected his mistake and he's pretty much where is last year, back on the top 4.
Irving - few good starts last year, this year well... he's now in the AHL. Probably won't be back in Calgary again.
Which other players/instances has made Hartley an improvement over Brent? Not that all of those are his fault, but I don't see the obvious improvement here.
(EDIT : I read again and saw you said just players, not young players. I guess you mean players overall?)
|
Brent had the advantage of more injuries last year as well, losing Glencross, Tanguay, Butler, Sarich, Stajan, Giordano, Stempniak, Smith, Backlund, Moss for extended periods of time. Gave him more opportunities to get guys into the lineup. This year with the exception of Kipper, Backs and Baertschi with a couple games for Cammy the Flames have been healthy, that couple with a more veteran lineup makes it harder for Hartley to get young guys into the lineup.

Who is he sitting beside that is teaching him all these wonders? Jay Feaster?

No but Craig Conroy is in that press box.. and if I remember correctly he had a lengthy productive NHL career.

Baertschi has played 12 games since November. Sitting isn't helping in this situation - send him down and let him play.

Damn I forgot about Conroy.
Either way... I would have thought these teachings could have come in the other 160/168 hours that the players aren't playing... just me though. Playing > sitting.

I don't think anyone would argue that... but suggesting he can't learn from someone like Conroy for one game in the press box is off base.
Anything beyond a game or two and I think everyone would agree the Heat would be a better option... but we have some great expertise upstairs for him to learn from for tonight's game.

Even Nemisz got 9 games of action last season there were so many injuries. Kolanos with 13 games.
It's too bad Paul Byron got injured this season. Would have liked to see more of him.

On the offensive side, it's his style of play that is making him struggle. When ever he gets the puck he trys to out muscle the defender like a power forward, and he doesn't have the size and strength to do that.
In his brief 5 game stint last year, you diddn't see any of this. He just tried to get open or go to the front of the net. Not sure why he tried to change up his style this year. I have noticed his dekes 1on1 never work.

I don't have an issue with him sitting tonight. It's gonna be a physical game and Bart seems to struggle against big tight checking teams. But I hope he is sent down once Backlund returns. No need to rush him.

I blame Comeau.
Seriously though, he needs to be playing top 6 minutes, and if he's not going to get them with the Flames, he's better off with the heat.

IMO he has underwhelmed completely. I stopped saying give him time back when the rumor of him sitting out his first boa got me all riled up.
Stats don't lie. His season is crap so far.

Yeah I noticed that too, plus he tries to be too physical and I don't think he needs to given his speed and quickness.
I don't know who got to him telling him he needed to be more physical because he doesn't. Play to your strengths Sven!
