Eight years with AAV of $8.25M for Ryan Getzlaf with ANA.

Great player no surprise that he resigned with Anaheim. If the Flames were to make a pitch for his services it would have been a serious over payment, we're probably better off trying to build through the draft.

8.25 million average? Seems pretty high. but he is a pretty solid player that would have fetched around the same if he went to UFA. Not much of a hometown discount, though.

Yup. Got to think that Perry will want the same. No chance they can afford both.

I heard that the Ducks have a cash flow problem and that Perry will now more than likely be traded. No the flames can not get him.

If the Ducks trade Perry I can't imagine what it would cost to land him.

Its always a bad idea to build through FA; its always a good idea to build through the draft.

If this was last years CBA we would have seen two or three years at 1 million per season to drop the cap hit to around 5.
Good.

And that is the cost of a big-time #1 C in the NHL today.

Interesting to see what this means for Corey Perry's future with the Ducks. Given their record, even if Anaheim can't sign him, they might keep him and go for it.

Again, why can't you do both?
In fact, building through the draft actually allows you to spend more money in free agency because a large part of your core would be signed to ELC's.
As for this contract, it's huge and outrageous. Getzlaf is good but not top-3 in the league good. Especially with the cap coming down in coming years. Crazy stuff.

Outside last year, Getz is has been getting better every year. Would have loved him on the flames, but we would never have landed him anyway.
$8.25M is what it costs for a legit #1 center.

According to @capgeek Getzlaf's $8.25M/yr ties him with Eric Staal, behind only Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby for annual cap hit.

You can, but on the UFA market, you usually have to overpay.
You supplement your core with UFA's, you don't start building around them.
Develop your team through the draft first, then supplement 1 or 2 pieces you are missing if you are close to winning.

So much money! I dont' really get it with the cap going down and all, maybe players are trying to make up the money they would get on a 10-15 yr contract. Hopefully this is not the new trend.
But they have lots of cap space right now, and with probably koivu and selanne coming off the books next year that's another 7 mill free.

8.25 is definitely an overpayment that could hurt the ducks in the last few years of his contract, but it was smart for Anaheim to lock up their number 1 center so they don't face potential center issues like Flames are currently facing.
