Here's what I typically get.
Pings are on average higher than Shaw, but it hasn't caused me any issues with online games.

Keep in mind Telus is much more anal about caps than Shaw and for every TV stream you watch your Internet takes a hit if you are getting TV

Pretty sure the bandwidth/caps for tv and internet are considered separate now. (ie, there is bandwidth for the tv which is over and above the internet listed bandwidth and it certainly doesn't effect caps)
Unless by TV stream you mean netflix?

He means that in a non fibre install (copper) Telus Internet will slow down depending on how many TV streams are running.

Telus TV is IP based. Every TV stream started chews up total bandwidth. If you have enough TV going at the same time, it'll slow your Internet right down.
As for caps, just meant data limits for Internet. There are no TV caps.

Ah, I'm on fiber so I don't see this slow down even with 4 tv's running.

Shaw doesn't offer more than 6 mbps upload on any of its current plans. Which sucks, because for well over a year as far back as Fall 2013 when I was on their BB250 plan, I would routinely get upload speeds of 10-15 mbps. Download speeds never got much above 150 mbps though, and I finally decided to switch down to BB100 last October.

Upload speed is kind of a moot point however past ~3 Mbps, unless you are inclined to be a massive P2P sharer, or host your own servers of some sort.
It can certainly affect Ping Latency in certain games, but again only if it's constantly being clogged by client-side traffic (ie, P2P sharing).

I would like a higher upload speed so I can stream better quality videos to my devices through Plex. 8 mbps or higher would at least allow me to choose 1080p quality most of the time, I'm capped at 720p as it is right now.

Can't say I've ever used Plex, but isn't Plex routinely used for local playback (ie a TV in a different room than your computer/network HDD)? Or do you use it to play back network content at remote locations?
If that's the case, I can see a higher U/L being beneficial. In that case, I'd get a high speed USB stick hah

I use playback through remote locations when I'm on trips and visiting relatives out of town. In the same boat using EMBY(mediabrowser). I can't stream up without cutting down the quality.
Cable is really slow right now for upstream because Calgary is really behind on the analog TV/telephone bandwidth reclaimation right now. We just all really need fiber to home.

Does Plex/EMBY not allow pre-buffering/pre-loading?
I mean, obviously a faster connection would be ideal, but one would think there would be some kind of option for that.
Don't listen to me though, I'm a physical media guy (eg I still buy blu-rays and often buy/lose fancy quick USB sticks). I would be aghast at any kind of quality throttling a streaming program would use.

It's got some buffering and throttling settings, but I haven't really fiddled around with them too much. Capping the streaming quality on other devices to line it up with my upload speed was just the simplest way to get things to play uninterrupted.

I was chatting with a Telus guy who came by and tried to swap me over from Shaw. Didn't take long to find out that on my side of the street, Telus only offers 25 down.
Brutal Telus. Brutal.

I personally prefer Telus internet. It never seems to have downtime and is fairly reliable. But what they fail to tell you when you book your service package is that some communities don't have the appropriate fibers to even get the service to you. I tried to get the Telus 100 internet and it wasn't until the guy was physically in my house that he found out my neighborhood doesn't have that capability. This is the second time this has happened. Maybe it's different now, but it would be nice if they had some sort of map online that told you what services were available where.

I am in a building that was described as Shaw only... I am trying to get away from them. Telus is only wired up to 6mb/s
You guys know any companies that use Shaw's connections or anything that I should try?

I'm considering switching to Telus for internet as I could get the 100 down/20 up package for the same price I'm paying for 50 down/5 up through Shaw. Does anyone have that Telus package here, and if so how close do you actually get to the advertised speeds? If the speeds are as claimed I'll make the switch, but if they're just "theoretical" maximums that you never get close to I won't bother

There's a spot on the Telus site specifically for checking service availability. I don't know how new it is.
