Theodore was decent when he played for Montreal.. after that declined pretty fast. I think with this groin injury, he should really start thinking about retiring...

A guy I went to high school with had just moved to Kamloops from Seattle, and his family had billeted Rob Tallis when he lived there. Didn't remember him playing that many games in the NHL.

I've mentioned it before, but when I was in Florida in December 2011 to watch the Flames play the Panthers I met and had a couple post game beers with Rob Tallas at a nearby Sunrise bar. Really nice guy, really knowledgeable (as you'd expect from a coach). The Flames had just lost in a shootout in Irving's first NHL start and so we spoke at length about Irving, about how Tallas had briefed Jose Theodore about Tanguay's shootout tendencies which helped the Panthers win, about Panthers prospects, and about the league in general. Great guy and I could tell he relished being able to talk about hockey with a knowledgeable fan. Glad to hear he got the chance to suit up, although he was very self-deprecating about his own abilities when we spoke.

They'd sign him to an amateur try-out contract, same as any of those other funky "college goaltender gets best seat in the house" stories that happen every couple years.

Is a former NHLer eligible for an amateur try-out contract?

Sure. Former pros can get re-sanctioned as amateurs by Hockey Canada if they are not under a professional contract. I doubt the NHL is even that stringent. The ATO is just the mechanism to allow for a team to sign a goaltender in an emergency situation like this.

Yeah, I thought that's why teams can't sign an AHL guy because he was considered a "pro". Perhaps it's if you're not currently playing pro hockey, or had filed retirement papers or something, that you are considered an amateur again (i.e. unlike NCAA rules or certain Olympics sports where once you go pro, you're done).

Man, what I wouldn't give to suit up as goalie and practice with the Flames or any other NHL team.

i'd love to suit up for the canucks in a flames/nucks game. i'd make sure to talk to one of the flames before the game and tell them to just put the puck on net. after a couple of quick goals i'm sure i'd get pulled. on my way to the canuck bench i'd throw off my mask, rip that disgusting jersey off my back and then pop off my chest gear to reveal a glorious flaming c across the chest of my underarmour shirt

...hey - a guy can dream can't he

...ps - a buddy of mine is a wicked good goalie and a couple of summers ago he was called to play goal for a bunch of jr's & pros. iggy sniped him up in the collar bone and he thought he had died it hurt sooo bad! ha!!! what i wouldn't do for pain like that!

In my 50ish years of watching hockey...I have only seen it once in the NHL, but, the rules allow a team to dress a non-roster goaltender if all the active goaltenders on a game roster cannot continue...I recall a game in the mid 60's where the 'Hawks ended up sending an equipment manager out there to mop up a game...but, unfortunately, I don't recall the details.
