Well, that was quicker than we all thought.
Feaster, you're back up...what else do you have up your sleeve?

Philly should be an obvious discussion partner. They now know that the Flames won't hesitate to deal their 1st and maybe something could be in the works for Couturier or so ... one can always dream. Also, I still believe they should go after Filppula if he goes to UFA.

Oh well. On the positive side the draft would have been kind of a downer with the Flames not picking until the 3rd round.

I like the fact the Feaster made an attempt at improving the Flames by attempting to sign Richards and ROR, but I'm just as happy that they didn't sign hère.
Love the paradox.

I think the move was bold, but it might constrain the flames from being able to make deals with the Avs if the GM is upset (but was unlikely anyways, since they were divisional rivals). And it means making offersheets against the flames is fair game. That said, will it constrain their ability to make deals or trades with other teams? I doubt it. If you're a GM, making offer-sheets is part of your job. With a salary cap thats set in aggregate for the league, offersheets don't have an affect on total salary, only salary distribution between RFAs with arb, RFAs without arb rights, and UFAs.
In addition, this offersheet suggests that at least Feaster is trying to improve this team, and address the lack of number 1 centre. What I like is how well thought out this was in terms of minimizing loss in longterm for gain in short-term - ie only a first and third. With a 10-20 draft pick as most likely for the flames, Reilly is a much better than average for a 15th overall pick. It means management is being thoughtful about how they pursue talent. It was a very creative approach.
I'd still like Feaster to target RJ Umberger or Weiss. And I think with the way JayBo, Wideman and Brodie are exceeding expectations, the flames are a much stronger teams, especially on the back-end than anyone expected. Which hopefully frees up someone who we can package with a forward, pick or prospect for a centre.

We didn't get him, so it was a useless exercise. It was pretty much guaranteed they would match so I'm not sure why they didn't make it a better offer/not bother at all.
All Feaster did was help the Avs get their best player back right now.

If Richards has fallen a bit out of favour with the Rags this season, not surprised if Feaster goes back in that direction, at least at a casual inquiry level.
But another 7 years of a contract was always a big hesitation point 2 years ago, and its still valid now.

I see this as signal that we wont be keeping our pick this year.

I was thinking the same thing. There will be no shortage of charlatans trying to take that 1st rounder from us by offering magic beans. I just hope Feaster doesn't feel pressured to bite now having lost his prize this time.

This kinda bugs me...the whole reason you do this is because YOU WANT THE PLAYER. So you need to make sure you get the player. You know you're over-paying because you're just buying the player. Why not make the offer one that garantees you win? Some people are patting Feaster on the back, but I can't help thinking he screwed this up....

I hear ya but that mentality cannot come at the expense of just adding NHL caliber centers to a team that currently has one. I applaud Feaster's efforts but he cannot just try to hit a homerun every couple of years and then go back into his cave.

There's no doubt the Flames desperately need a skilled number 1 center, so its too bad they matched. At the same time, I'm glad that Feaster at least tried.

You dont cripple your franchise worse than it already is just to get a borderline first line center.
