The book A Drive Into The Gap actually deals with a very similar story, namely the base ball bat used by Roberto Clemente to get his 3,000th (and final) hit before his death. Multiple people claiming "no this is the 3,000th hit bat" and ultimately coming down to "well it doesn't really matter which bat was used, the record stands"
