No worries folks, the Flames will be drafting first overall this year! Or at least in the top 3!

The late 80s is when I first started paying attention to offseason NHL stuff, like drafts. I remember thinking about unworldly terrible the Nordiques were back then getting three 1st picks in a row. Hard to believe the Oilers now have 4 in a row.

why the green text? Any team that doesn't make the playoffs has a chance at the first overall pick and if we make a trade to aquire another first rounder form a team and they don't make the playoffs, we could potentially draft #1 & #2

I count 3... unless I'm missing the "they're going to finish last again this year" joke, of course.
It would be interesting to add up the number of first-rounders that each team has had playing for them at different times. I count four for the Flames: Bridgeman, Ramage, Nolan and Hamrlik. For some reason, I always think that Wickenheiser played for us too, but of course he never did. I don't know why I always think that.

To draft 1st over all the Flames need to trade:
Iggy
Kipper
Cammi
Step
Stajan
J-Bo
Gio
Sarich
Tangs
By trading all these guys you are setting up years of losing but at the same time collecting alot of draft picks and prospects.

No, I was mistaken. That little 8-bit Islander dude in 2009 looked like an Oiler to me. I am so used to them picking 1st, I didn't bother to fact check.

The vast majority of teams haven't. You'll also notice with a few exceptions (for instance, the Nordiques, who moved and then acquired Patrick freaking Roy), many of the team who draft first overall, don't end up winning a cup afterwards. They just end up sucking more. The blow it up rebuild, is not necessary for success.

Is it just me or do the last three picks look sadder than the rest of the picks... They look pretty depressed if you ask me.

Interesting to note the jersey/year, and think how quickly some of those teams turned around because of it (Nords 3 straight = Avalanche domination the next decade, Sens 3 in 4 years = one of the best teams of the next decade, Caps/Pens/Hawks mid-00's, etc etc).
Then look at the last 3 years, and think where the Oilers are still at. Pathetic. If they can't turn themselves into a contender within the next 3-5 years they should just erase that franchise from existence.

Impressive: Quebec/Colorado took those three 1st overall picks they had, and converted them into: Claude Lemieux, Sylvain Lefebvre, Peter Forsberg, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Steve Duchesne, Patrick Roy and Sandis Ozolinsh.

Actually most teams have ha da #1 pick, only Ana, SJ, Nsh, you do have to go back a few years for most of them though.

Someone with photoshop skills needs to replace the Oiler trio with those skinny and small skaters from the original NES Ice Hockey game.

I think it would be funnier to replace them with three little 8-bit Stanley Cups.

Don't get your hopes up the team that finishes last still has the best chance at getting #1. It is not an evenly weighted lottery.

Oiler's got Hall, RHN, Yakupov which is a pretty good haul but at this time you have to think a three year run earlier would be awesome.
Kane, Stamkos, Tavares

The thing about the Senators run of 3 of 4 is that 2 of those 3 weren't prominent figures when they were a good team. Berard was basically flipped for Redden, which was pretty astute, and Daigle was one of the more famous flops. Phillips was a good foot soldier for them but I wouldn't consider him a front-and-centre figure like Alfredsson, Hossa, et al.
It goes to show, you need to find talent in other places to succeed, which the Senators did over and over. Drafting high helps, but it's no guarantee. Even the Blackhawks... sure they drafted Kane #1 and Toews was a high pick, but they win nothing without Keith exceeding his pedigree or Seabrook developing into a top-10 d-man or flipping the Flyers a bag of pucks for Sharp.
This is why the Oilers have not found their way out of the basement yet... they have to find talent from other places. It could be argued they've started to - Eberle was a mid-rounder and may be the best of their young core, Schultz has been a decent find and Dubnyk is coming around. Nice to see they've mishandled Ryan Whitney pretty badly though!
