I will never forget that draft. They go to his house later in the week and he's running around very trailer parkesque in cut off jeans with a bunch of other goofs playing street hockey without shirts.

My buddy turned to me laughing and said, "Ugh, looks like another winner draftpick for the Flames."

Good luck Matt.

Fun fact: the Sharks picked Vlasic at 35th overall with the 2nd round pick we sent to them for Miikka Kiprusoff.

Such a solid draft year. Seems like every team but the flames walked away with a solid piece.

I guess he's decided to be an enforcer with 12 fights so far this season, 16 and 17 the last two years. We could use him in that role.

Scholastic player of the year in the OHL the year the Flames drafted him too. I remember that was a big selling point the scouts were talking up.

I guess academic IQ isn't the same as hockey IQ.

Incredible dude with a strong passion for the game.

Wish things worked out better for him here in CGY, but hopefully he finds a place in SJ for him to stick. Seriously wish the best for this dude.

Actually looked pretty good until injuries continually caught up with him.

One thing that is over looked with some Flames draft busts is that injuries really destroyed their development (Pelech, Tzachuk. Krahn).

Chucko as well.

Pelech fought Boll in the game if anybody was wondering, he probably lost but he landed some shots of his own.

Didnt live up to 1st round pick status but I think he can still be a quality 4th line forward or bottom pairing D.

More interesting facts from that draft...

- The Flames picked Gord Baldwin in the 3rd round at 69th overall
- The LA Kings picked Jonathan Quick at pick number 72
- In the 4th round at 96th overall, the Buffalo Sabres selected, with a pick that they acquired from the Flames...drumroll please...current Flames defenceman Chris Butler
- The Flames had two 3rd round picks, at #69 (Gord Baldwin) and #74 (Dan Ryder), and a compensatory 4th round pick at #111 (J.D. Watt)
- The Phoenix Coyotes selected, at #105 overall...Keith Yandle

There's only one thing, as far as I can see, that turned out well for the Flames out of that draft. On November 14, 2003, the Flames traded their 2nd round pick in the 2005 Draft to the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks used that pick to select Marc-Edouard Vlasic 35th overall. The return from that 2nd round pick was Miikka Kiprusoff.

If you're looking at it like that then you need to realize that 30 teams passed over Yandle at total of 104 times and 71 times over Quick. If it were that easy there wouldn't be any draft steals. Health physical and mental development of the prospect and coaching within the organization play huge parts in turning draft picks into quality NHL players.

Maybe drafting is too much of a gamble and we should just trade off all of our draft picks for surer returns.

2005 was all over the board. Sharks took 10th ranked North American Setoguchi 8th in the draft, Lattendresse fell like a rock, and Pelech wend in the 1st (mid 2nd expected)

Different lists for different teams I guess.
