I'm trying to figure out why the cost was so high? There couldn't be much of a market for a guy that wasn't going to play but counts against the cap.

What the . . . ? Hold on, wait a minute. Tim Thomas being traded is not the news story here. The news story is that Eklund just broke a trade. Is this true? Did Eklund break this story?

conditional is the key term here I think...only a 2nd rounder if he plays x amount of games I bet

Feasted traded a second to dump salary.
The Islanders traded their second to gain salary.

Lol spent a 2nd round pick to get to the cap floor? ROFL
Steve Staios not available to take a bonus laden contract Snow?

Won't be the last time you will see this under the new CBA, there will be a lot of teams that struggle to get to the floor.

I wonder how many teams that put money into revenue sharing are pissed off?
The Islanders just made a mockery of the cap floor.

Not the same. Islanders made trade for cap hit not salary.

They also traded their second last year for Visnvosky (another great move!).
Splendid asset management as per usual from Garth Snow... Still I'd take him as our GM before Mike Milbury.

Wait...
Do the Isles get the cap hit from Tim Thomas but they don't actually have to pay him because he won't report?
If so, they basically traded a 2nd round pick for 5 million dollars? Not bad for a team hurting financially.

They removed that particular hammer from Snow's toolbox in the new CBA. You can no longer use performance bonuses to reach the floor.

Yup, they don't pay him. They traded for cap gain to get to floor.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
The Boston Bruins only get a draft pick from the Islanders for Tim Thomas if he reports to them or any other team if NYI trade his rights.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Otherwise, the benefit for BOS is gaining cap space Thomas was eating up because he's on a 35+ contract. Counts against cap no matter what.

Ok trade makes more sense now from an isles perspective, nothing of value given:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie The Boston Bruins only get a draft pick from the Islanders for Tim Thomas if he reports to them or any other team if NYI trade his rights.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Otherwise, the benefit for BOS is gaining cap space Thomas was eating up because he's on a 35+ contract. Counts against cap no matter what.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Which is ideal for NYI. No acquisition price. NYI can toll contract to next year if they like, continue to get cap benefit in perpetuity.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Or NYI can let contract expire at end of season and be done with it. Their call. Thomas has no intent to return to play at this time.
Bruins still are looking good in this trade managed to dump 5mil in cap hit for nothing.
