One injury is hardly an emergency, the Flames had two goalies on NHL deals I wonder if they could have even gotten away with an emergency recall.

Depends. If Kipper is out 4-5 games, likely not. More than that, yes.

They got away with doing it to play Sven last year and Backlund for the one game he got in to replace Bertuzzi (unless that doesn't count because he hadn't reported to the Rockets at that point)... don't see why they couldn't get away with it when the only other goalie is under contract to a team in Finland.

Those guys were under NHL contracts at that time, and were emergency replacement pursuant to waivers. Different than an emergency back-up goalie, not under contract.

Now he will be making 80k while in the AHL. What was Taylor making with the Heat prior to this?

It will be similar except for the fact it's not two goalies that can steal a game, it's which one will crap the bed less than the other.

Sign Brossoit to an ELC, emergency recall him, ELC contract slides when he goes back down maintaining the open slot... or is that against the rules somehow?

Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward on #Flames signing G Danny Taylor: “He's very deserving.”
Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
More Ward on #Flames G Taylor: "I said goodbye to him at 5:30 a.m. here at the rink ... He was pretty pumped up to be where he was going."
Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
2013 has been quite a ride already for Danny Taylor. The new #Flames goalie became a dad on New Year's Day. Now, gets NHL call-up.

I was thinking that too, but seems like Danny Taylor has been playing great... good reward for him and keep him as the cards for next year. No biggie.

They're going to take all the precautions, so I'm guessing they'll keep Kipper out about 7-10 days. I'd like to see Irving keep the reigns to start, and only if he should fall on hard times should we throw Taylor in. Last thing Irving needs is one of the guys that was ahead of him on the AHL club coming in and bumping him back at the NHL level..would be a bit of a confidence killer. I'm betting they just have Taylor to mind the gate and fill in for practice, though.
I'm fully confident in Irving at this point to carry the load for us for 3-4 games if needed, and pick us up some wins.

Brossoit is a fine goalie prospect, but are there people here who would seriously rather bring up a 19 year old junior goalie as opposed to a 26 year old who's been playing pro hockey, against pro players....and playing very, very well?

Also depends on how well Irving plays I would think. If he stinks it up against the Jackets all bets are off on Saturday night's game although they may want to go back to Irving because he played well last time in Vancouver.

this is good news in my mind
when Kiprusoff went down my head had three scenarios playing out.
Best - Kiprusoff isn't hurt all that long
Mid - Kiprusoff is hurt mid to long term and the team realizes they can't replace him so they keep the roster as is and hope for the best
Worst - Kiprusoff is hurt mid to long term and they panic and trade a 2nd round pick / good prospect for a goaltender that can't hope to be Kiprusoff anyway in an attempt to salvage the season.
Taylor is a sign that either Best or Mid are true.
Good!

Ryan Pinder @RyanPinder
Talk around #AHLHeat folks today: signing/call-up of new father Danny Taylor could not have happened to a more deserving/harder-working guy.

To play regularily? No.
But to practice with the club and open the gate on game days for a week or so while we wait on doctors to see if Kipper is out for more then two or three games? Sure, why not if it saves us a contract slot. I'm not talking about playing him.

I don't follow the baby Flames much, but wasn't he well ahead of Irving down there?
If so, why wouldn't he be the guy playing ahead of Irving?

I think the concern is more about using a contract on Taylor, where if they signed Brossoit and he didn't play 6 games, his contract would slide and not count against the 50.
Of course, that assumes that calling up Brossoit would even have been a possibility. Baertschi's recall last year was an extremely rare situation brought about by the high number of injuries.
I'd say there's a good chance that the emergency call-up agreement between the NHL and the CHL probably doesn't make special provisions for goalies.

My guess is the Flames are basing it on more than half a season of AHL play in determining who plays and despite some good play of late Taylor was able to be signed to an NHLcontract this late into the season for a reason, nobody else really sees him as a viable NHL option.

Not sure how a guy who was out there for anyone to sign, and who is on a one year deal, is much of a trade piece.
