We had sliders, pulled pork and mini milkshakes along with whatever cold cut and bun combo for midnight snack. Sliders and pulled pork soothe the intoxicated guest.

Tent Wedding in Anderson Ranch
I was a groomsman for my brother-in-law's wedding and they had their wedding at Anderson Ranch by Spruce meadows. The wedding was a tent wedding, and all rentals and catering was done by Special Events weddings. It was really neat, and included a separate tent for the bar, a dance floor, and it was perfect for a summer wedding. It did get a little warm though since there was no air conditioning.
Get a good wedding DJ and that makes a world of difference for having fun. I went to a couple weddings last year that cheaped out on the DJ, and it wasn't nearly as fun.
Get really good MC's. They can set the tone for the whole night. At my wedding this past year, my two good friends were the MC's and they incorporated video from the morning ceremony into their introduction. It was pretty funny. One of the MC's brought his GoPro camera and mounted it to a hard hat and people were wearing that around on the dance floor. I have yet to see the footage yet (might get a seizure)
Someone mentioned Gangnam Style. As cheesy as it is, we had our bridal party enter doing the dance. One of our games was actually a dance off between the guys and the girls. The guys had practiced the Party Rock Anthem shuffle weeks before and surprised the girls and the crowd with it.
I REALLY wanted to do this, but the wife didn't approve, but it would be amazing if you did a nacho cheese fountain (similar to chocolate fountain) for a midnight snack (maybe saddledome nacho cheese?).
We also had poutine as one of our appy's
Good luck!

We had a hot dog bar set up for a midnight snack
I also built a photo booth and had it set up all night away from the reception so people could sneak off and do photo shoot with the self timer
I asked my father to host the night before with a fish fry and drinks and we had a funny money casino (all games we made up) as a reception party for our guests once they had arrived to town. Everybody got their 50 one dollar paper bills and all games were a dollar play. What ever money you had left over at the end you could right your name on the back and drop into prize boxes. We then drew the prizes at the end of the night for the next day We also made sure to have a pit boss that was rigging games so everybody would win and he was stuffing cash in peoples hands etc.
Prizes
- Wedding VIP 2 front row seats at the ceremony and seats at the head table
- a pro photograph with the bride and groom
- instant song request during dance
- wedding speech shout out by bride and groom
- a rum with groom and father of the groom
- dance with the bride
- five free drink tickets
- first to eat at the dinner
It was a pretty good party and got the guests engaged immediately for the weekend.

Love the hotdog and nacho bar for midnight snack idea.
Candy table always goes over well.
We had our wedding party bring a jersey of their favorite hockey or football team - most were Flames or Stamps, but we didn't want to force anyone, so some others were mixed in there. Made for some fun wedding party pictures and we were introduced like the starting line-up at a game when we all came in for the reception.
Since Hubby and both love sports, the whole thing was sports themed - we had little hockey sticks for centre pieces (made them out of wood and painted wedding colors) that were mounted on pucks.
Also walked back down the aisle after the ceremony was done to the theme from MNF - we thought about Hockey Night in Canada - but decided that was a little too obvious.
You might be able to work some of those ideas in if you like them.

This does not make sense to me. Every wedding I've been to, the bride and groom seem so averse to kissing each other.

No one remembers anything about weddings besides how much booze they were able to obtain, and whether they had any food to grab when they were hammered and hungry. People try convince themselves the color of the ribbon on the centerpiece matters, but that is all people will remember.

Quoted for truth
Here's what people remember from our wedding:
1. One of our male friends being so wasted he did a cartwheel and almost hit one of the grannies
2. Wife's aunt having a wardrobe malfunction on the dance floor exposing her fake boobs for all to see
3. Female friend of ours getting loaded and calling herself 'Russian princess' to anyone who would listen.

Only men think of it that way.
The women will remember what the bride looked like, what kind of dress it was, if her dress was better or worse, if her wedding was nicer or not, and it goes on. Women have a totally different perspective on this then men.
At the end of the day it's about make your wife happy as the wedding really isn't about the man.

Mine totally is about the groom :-D
Seriously, I think the little things make the wedding great. Yes that means having lots of alcohol available, and a good DJ.
BUt remember to have the flow of the room set up to be conducive to the dance floor, once the music starts that should be the focal point.
Have a few things that are uniquely you. Fpr example, if you do a candy bar have candy that has a personal connection.
No guys aren't going to go on about how awesome your centre pieces are. But you want people to feel like they're at a wedding not someone's unfinished basement.
Something other than a plain guest book. But make sure it's good for the two of you. Something that Brits out your personality.
I agree that a good emcee puts people in the right mood. Someone that is funny, yet appropriate. There's a ton of emcee material on this site of you do a search.
Getting people engaged in the reception is the big thing. If that's from laughing at the emcee, playing a game to get the bride and groom to kiss, or having music transition you through, engagement is key (meh I like the pun, yes it's intended).
While everyone says make it about the bride, don't get me wrong keep her happy, but make it awesome for the guests!

Oldest married couple at the table gets the centrepiece to take home.
Don't leave too much time between the wedding and the reception...just enough time for one or two drinks...no more.

And that's how you set up the rest of your life to have everything fun you want to do trumped by your wife's wishes.
You BOTH should have fun, this whole "do whatever my wife says because it's easier when she's happy" = "I need a divorce. I shouldn't have married this monster, she's ruining my life".

I don't really want to publicly announce this on the internet for some reason, I don't know why. However, sort of looking for cheap items which could make a difference!

Not expecting a whole lot of kids. However, the caricature idea for cocktail hour is defiantly a corny, unique idea, might be up our ally!

Small details are the best, thank you for the idea! I might do that.

Pick something other than tapping a wine glass to make you too kiss.
Doing "trivia" for the couples to see which tables get to go get food first.
those were some of the simple yet effective things I noticed.
|
Thank you, good idea. We might not do party gifts, other than the wedding party. We might make a rule on tapping the glass means they have to kiss first in order to keep that to a minimum.

Ours hangs in the hallway, and after 13 years I still look at it now and then to read the names. A guest book just gets stuffed in a drawer and forgotten about.

Would you mind explaining this more? I like it. I could see how a guest book gets old.

Thank you! We have a venue and are going the band route. As for the food, I like your taste! I like weddings which are relaxed and about the couple.

Guest books actually don't get old if you do them right. There is a major issue when it comes to the signed mattes.
1. You need an acid free matte.
2. You need an acid free pen that is fade resistant and instant dry.
3. You need to frame it behind special glass that's going to be very expensive.
If you don't do all 3 it's going to fade badly over time. It's a cool option for sure but so problematic.
