I think I was about 6 or 7 and my parents told me that NHL players are just people like you and me. So I spent a day looking up Phil Russell and every other P Russell in the phone book hoping to talk to my favorite player. I figured he might want to hang out with me for the day.

when i was a kid i never grasped the line change. i thought hockey players were god-like and the forwards and d-men on the ice played the entire game
i also recall cheering for a team becuz i liked their sweater.... thank god that was when the canucks had the flying-v so i never even considered cheering for them!

I cheered for the Canucks on their first stanley cup run because i thought i had to because they were from Canada. Good thing that went away after 1 year.
Yes i did pull out a white dish towel and start waving it like a fool after Roger Nielson did it in Chicago.

I had only seen the NHL in black and white. My grandfather bought a colour tv. The Flyers were inexplicably wearing orange uniforms. I fiddled with the colour controls until they were wearing proper red uniforms. For some reason, this adjustment screwed up the colours on the other programs. There was only one station to watch. I thought he had got a defective tv. The technology was in its infancy. It took a long time to figure that one out.

When I was young, I could never figure out why they would pull the puck back on faceoffs. I thought that pushing it forward would be better because that was they way you wanted to go.

When I was little I thought when Guy Lafleur (or others) took the puck behind the net (It was a 'safe zone') that other players were not allowed to touch or go after that player....

I used to think the Flames making it out of the first round of the playoffs was common thing.

I thought my dad was crazy for listening to the game on the radio. Little did I know it was easier to listen than watch most nights.

I thought icing meant that the players had to leave the ice and go put icing on a cake before they could come back on.

I grew up in Brandon MB watching Junior and thought this was the highest level competition of hockey in the world.
Also thought when fans were chanting the other teams goalie name, that they were cheering them on.

I thought Selanne was pronounced Salami until I was 7.
When I was really young, maybe 3 or 4, I thought that shots mattered more than goals.

I used to think that every time a team was dumping the puck behind the net, the refs were calling an icing/offside. I was calling the ref incompetent when they were not calling it... Took me several years to understand the true meaning of icing/offside.

A friend of mine here in Edmonton used to think that a Home Game meant the Home team got to win. He had bern to tonnes of games before they lost one and can vividly remember his shock f inding out
