No, but PIM per game also doesn't make you a tough team to play against.

To put this in perspective. The Standard deviation PIM per game last year was 1.7 PIM per game across the entire league; +/- less than 1 penalty per game average. Things will normalize. The moment the flames get in to a single fight, they'll be right up there with any other team.

Interestingly the average PIM per game this year is significantly higher than last season, however.

I'm sure it has to do with short training camps, and a lot of guys doing nothing during the lockout. Lazy penalties and sloppy hockey for the first month for sure.

Not surprisingly, really. Its how they play this year. A lot more skating, a lot less hitting.

Some may argue that PIM show a player being able to play on the edge, sometimes crossing over it.

Lack of PIMS tells me we are too soft. Period. Not "hard" to play against... Our front of net presence protecting our goalie is a obvious example.

Taking out the fighting majors from other teams, we drop to about 5th or 6th in minor PIMs.

Flames are playing a much better puck possession game this year so far.

That plus no fighting and a less physical style and its no surprise we haven't been penalized much.

There has only been one coincidental minor that I can recall Jones went off mad with some Oiler. That was the only time that I can recall a Flame being upset with an opposition player.

Fighting majors (and misconducts that the Flames have totally avoided) don't hurt the team from a PP / PK perspective.

The Flames are in 15th spot in Power Play time - PK .... they have been on the power play 6 seconds longer than the PK.

Playing non-aggressive does not draw penalties .... There is no advantage in playing soft. It simply leads to the other team controlling the scoring area in front of both goals.

You can pass all you want around the edges to but eventually you have to get into the scoring area where for the most part the other team is waiting to make it hard for you to score.

Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom would not be nearly as effective (although off the skill chart) without low skill Holstrom and Cleary fighting for space in the scoring Zone.

thats good because being giving up 6 goals on 18 penalties is horrible. can't put yourself in those types of situations.
