Well in terms of thieves I am thinking stealing wallets, b and e etc. Seems easy enough to get a SIN if you really want it.

People carry their SIN card with them?
I haven't even had a SIN card since I was about 14.

But over 500,000 of them in electronic format and matched to other identifying info? A very serious breach.

Lost from an office in Quebec?

I even said as much to the girl on the phone.
I said that I didn't feel too good about calling due to a potential security breah and then giving my SIN out over the phone. She agreed, but said it was the only way to determine if I was affected.
I wasn't.

If you have been compromised, what services do you suggest to monitor for identify theft? Any good comprehensive services that monitor credit bureaus etc?

Lost in Quebec and the kicker is that loans originating in Quebec arent affected because Quebec administers their own student loan program.

A lot of Canada's federal buildings are in Quebec though, as part of the capital region encompasses Hull-Gatineau.
I do think it's weird that it was on a portable hard drive though.

Well my info was compromised.
Apparently letters are going out to everyone that was compromised. The lady on the phone told me what the letter would say and what I should do. Basically you need to call your bank and tell them to monitor for suspicious activity. Then you can call both of the credit agencies (Equifax and TransUnion) and then they monitor your credit for suspicious activity.
Equifax was pretty painless... about 5 minutes going through automated menus and now they will monitor my credit for 6 years I think.
TransUnion I was on hold for about 30 minutes and I decided to give up. Maybe I'll try calling right when the office opens.

Ditto here. Thanks for posting this information. It was a little bit hard to hear the representative over the phone and missed a couple of the agencies or institutions to contact.
Damn.

Phone #'s she gave me:
Equifax - 1-800-465-7166
TransUnion - 1-800-663-9980
I asked if I should call my credit card company as well, and she said I probably didn't need to since they monitor for suspicious activity anyways, but it wouldn't hurt anything.

Can this be done online or do you have to call?
