Still waiting for someone to post about picture quality from certain cables so we can laugh at them...

I argued with an FS guy about this that was trying to push expensive HDMI cables on a friend.

Seriously, the only thing that could possibly arise from a cheap cable is that it breaks after too many removals and insertions (Virgin Auction thread allusion noted). That probably isn't likely for a person who connects it and leaves it alone, and even then Winners or Memory Express type places would take it back and replace it.

I would like to think that people just buy expensive HDMI cables because of convenience and not bothering to educate themselves or look for less expensive options.

For specialized uses such as for long cables, HDMI splitters, 3D or ARC, it pays not to just go for the cheapest cable. Having said that, I wouldn't buy cables at Future Shop as I get all mine at Monoprice.

You want to be sure whichever one you get is a decent one. At that length you can run into issues if it is a crappy one. Our house came with probably more like a 40 ft one that gives annoying sparklies from the cable box and the ps3 can't connect at all.

Just a word of caution, I believe that any cable that runs through a wall needs to be CL2 rated. Meaning it has extra insulation to protect against fire.

I have read stories the insurance can deny claims if they discover non-CL2 in wall cable in your house, even if it didn't start the fire.

This all maybe internet BS, but I thought I'd warn none the less. Maybe someone here knows for sure?

Cables that are installed inside a wall need to be rated for such an install.

There are a couple reasons for it, depending on the type, but rate of burning and amount/toxicity of smoke produce when burning are the 2 main reasons.

CL2 is simply slow burning, and is for in wall installs. Plenum or riser rated cables also have less toxic smoke and are for installs where there is airflow, like above a dropped ceiling where HVAC runs (plenum) or below risers.

edit: I could see a situation where having the wrong wiring might cause some insurance issues, but I don't know if there is anything that says that is true in practice.

The only concern with cheap HDMI cables is they can have crappy connectors. I've thrown several cheap HDMI cables away cause the signal would drop at times randomly. Monoprice is cheap but still reliable.
