Yea his lousy 32/35 last year was sure one of the things holding us back.
Him being one of the best leaders in the game and the heart and soul of this franchise are sure unimportant too...
Give your head a shake.

Who are we going to use the money on?
My bet is he gets something around 5-6 M.
$7M in free agency if the Flames trade him.

this.
Iginla's generation of players have benefited from far superior training and health regimes. Seallane would be a prime example.

Of course he does.
He also wants a comfortable final contract to take him into retirement, or close to it.
It all depends if Feaster views Iginla as an essential piece to his Calgary Flames in the next half-decade.
If he does this will get settled quickly and quietly for a term that will surprise some people hoping for a big discount from the captain. Iginla will not be suddenly dropping below 5 million a season.
Something like Nehkara just posted makes a lot of sense. I suspect the final figure would be a tad higher.

I mean, Buffalo offered Doan $7.5M... they'd probably offer Iggy a round 10.

There's no way Iginla would get 7 on the open market at this point.

I would rather pay him more (market), one yaer at a time, than sign a 4 or 5 year deal.

Where's the rapid decline?
He's not the same guy he was 5 years ago, to expect that would be asinine, but as per usual you are massively over stating things.

That's refreshing to hear. I too hope he retires a Flame.

That is a good contract for Iginla.... It is all the Flames can fit in under the cap and keep all but one of Bouwmeester, Cammalleri, Wideman, Kipperand Hudler.
To make room for a $5M one of these 5 guys is not a Flame in 2013/14

He's gone from 98 points to 67. So it's true that there is a downward trend. But you're right, that's oversimplifying it greatly.
This hasn't been a good team for a long time, the fact that he continues putting up 30+ goals and 65+ points when everyone and their dog knows the puck is going to end up on his stick, is pretty remarkable.
Iginla is about as much of a sure thing as there is in sport.

Your theory is dispelled by the post above you, unless you mean he would get far more than 7.
There is the possibility that the CBA will change things and lower what he could have gotten, but there is always a market for proven commodities, and Iginla is about as proven as they come.

One example contrary to a statement isn't proof, especially when the circumstances are different.

Sign him and keep him. I have no idea what Iggy should be signed for, but I believe he should remain a Flame and retire a Flame.
That being said, if he does go somewhere else (and let's hope not) I will cheer him on, and hopefully he can raise the Stanley Cup.

No kidding. I bet he doesn't even come close to 80 points this year!

Even that isn't an indication of a "rapid decline" considering that he also put up 67 in 05-06. I don't expect to see a return to the 90 point range, but he is only one season removed from 86 so I don't think mid-70's is at all unrealistic.

He is also going to get more money from the Flames just by virtue of the fact that he's the captain and face of the franchise.
Before the lockout, I believed that they were going to wait to see what the new financial system was going to look like, then make a deal before the puck drops on the season. I'll stand by that prediction now.
4 year deal with a $6M cap hit (7,6,6,5) announced late next week.
