It might not be legal to do that anymore, so the repair might be more like $600 at a muffler shop.

I have also discovered that exhaust work is pretty easy to DIY. A sawzall with a metal blade is your friend, and Auto Value sells pipes, connectors, mufflers, and U clamps, so they might have catalytic converters as well.
May need a tiny bit of welding exp to do this. And a tiny bit of fabricating exp as well.

Edit: What's that stuff you can get at NAPA? Q-bond could do the trick.

My car also has a problem, it simply won't start. I've tried jump-starting it, hill-starting it ... nothing. Is there any chance anyone could help me diagnose the problem from a picture?

Spoiler!

To the OP,

The "jerking" of the car in a high load situation could be a misfire caused by an ignition problem. I'd check ignition coil(s), plugs, and wires.

Catalytic converter or fuel issues are just as likely, but this is just something else to look into.

1.) When driving down the highway, the vehicle does not seem to have enough power to climb hills at a reasonable speed. When the car kicks down a gear it drives fine but when climbing hills when it kicks down two gears the car decelerates and the motor revs and I slowly climb the hill decelerating all the way down to 50 or 60 kms per hour.

2.) Sometimes when starting from a complete stop, at about 10 or 15 kms per hour the car will no longer accelerate. It sort of jerks along like it is misfiring or something. It doesn't do this all the time, only sometimes. When this happens, if I step on the gas the transmission kicks down to first and the car accelerates just fine.

I have recently changed the plugs and plug wires and fuel filter. This didnt fix anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Enough with the jokes guys. to the owner this is serious.

I'm not a real mechanic but a car buff and to me it sounds like a computer problem. when you say "sometimes" is that when the car has been running a long time (hot engine?) sometimes a sensor sends the wrong info to the computer when it gets hot and causes all kinds of problems.

What I would do first before spending another dime is re-setting the computer(disconnect battery for a few minutes) if that doesn't work have the codes read at a dealer, it could be just a stupid $40 sensor.

Good luck.
